Set the Record Straight, Part II: The Colour Question on Saba

SABA (THE BOTTOM) - Colonial societies have associated lighter skin, European ancestry, and social standing with education, refinement, authority, and respectability. Those assumptions shaped all societies in the region, including Saba. These social facts can be found in any credible history book. However, focusing exclusively on this colonial inheritance cannot explain how power operated and keeps shifting in the Caribbean. In this second installment of setting the record straight we present a way of reading and experiencing Saba that is not dictated by the dominant racialized debates taking place in Europe, North America, or among Caribbean diasporic communities residing in these places. Arrindell welcomed, Mark Blankwater from JOGG (Healthy Youth, Healthy Future) for a courtesy visit to discuss opportunities for strengthening collaboration in support of healthier lifestyles and positive child development across the Dutch Caribbean. During the meeting, JOGG provided an overview of its work on Bonaire, Saba, and St. Eustatius, where the organization supports local governments through evidence-based programs that encourage healthy eating, physical activity, increased water consumption, and healthier school environments. The discussion also highlighted successful initiatives such as multilingual child health monitoring, school-based physical activity research, water dispenser projects, and the Nijntje Beweegt (Miffy Moves) program for young children. The report includes sections from SMMC’s Supervisory Council, Board of Directors, and External Auditor BDO B.V., as well as 2025 highlights, chapters on medical and patient care, performance figures, and the organization’s corporate social sustainability efforts.   Additionally, it covers the 2025 financial statements, which received a clean audit opinion from external auditor BDO B.V. THE NETHERLANDS (THE HAGUE) – Recently students of the Dance and Arts Dimensions Academy Foundation (DADA) paid a courtesy visit to the Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary of Sint Maarten where Minister Plenipotentiary Drs. Gracita Arrindell and Cabinet staff welcomed the delegation during their visit to the Netherlands. The visit served as an opportunity for DADA to express its appreciation to Minister Arrindell and Vereska Illidge for the support and hospitality extended during the academy's cultural exchange visit to the Netherlands in 2025.
