Traffic Accident involving Transport Van Causes Traffic Disruption

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Just after 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning August 21, 2026, the Police Dispatch Center received several calls reporting a traffic accident before the roundabout in the area behind the Sint Maarten Medical Center (SMMC). According to the reports, a Brink’s armored transport truck lost control and overturned on the roadway. Police patrol officers and members of the Traffic Department were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers were informed that no one was injured during the incident. Dog attacks, dug-out nests, and selfies: Sint Maarten hopes for a more respectful sea turtle nesting season

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Following multiple incidents of serious disturbance to sea turtles in Sint Maarten during the 2025 nesting season, the Nature Foundation is asking residents and visitors to approach these locally protected species with greater care and vigilance in the coming season. The next four months are expected to bring a rise in sea turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs, putting these vulnerable animals at risk of injury, death, or abandoned nesting attempts. From roughly May through December, three species of sea turtle — the green, hawksbill, and leatherback — are known to nest on Sint Maarten's shorelines. Simpson Bay, Dawn Beach, and Gibbs Bay are among the most visited nesting sites, though nesting has been recorded on...

From Motherhood to Early Literacy: Celebrating Families through Reading

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Supporting families means supporting the whole child; from a mother's well-being and a baby's earliest days to the development of a lifelong love of reading. Early literacy begins before a child enters school, and can begin even before birth: talking, singing, sharing stories, and reading together from birth all help create positive early experiences with books, language, and learning. As part of Health Week, the Sint Maarten Library took part in activities focused on supporting mothers, babies, parents, and families while highlighting the importance of early literacy and access to Library resources. On Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Library hosted a Story Time session for a warm turnout of 12 young children and their caregivers, with Librarian...

SCDF Reminds Public Carnival 2027 Registration Closes September 1

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF) is reminding the general public that registration for Carnival 2027 will officially close on September 1, 2026. Registration will close for troupes, booths, pageants, bands and the calypso competition. Registration for season passes will open at a later date. Interested persons can register through the SCDF’s new digital platform, www.sxmcarnival.life, which quickly grew in popularity during the Carnival 2026 celebrations in April. Registration can be completed directly at www.sxmcarnival.life/registration. The SCDF said the platform represents an important step in modernizing the way Carnival information, registration and participant engagement are managed. Early registration allows the foundation to finalize key preparations, assess participation levels, organize logistics and ensure that Carnival 2027 is planned in...
