MHF Reminds the Public: Call the Crisis Line for In-Person Emergency Mental Health Support

SINT MAARTEN (CAY HILL) - The Mental Health Foundation (MHF) is continuing to recognize 25 years supporting the community and World Mental Health Day by reminding the public that the MHF crisis phone line is available for adults and children in need of emergency support. The number, +1 (721) 585-5556, is confidential and staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Anyone in need of in-person, emergency mental health support should call the crisis line. No referral is needed to access emergency mental health support — MHF has a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse and a registered nurse/case manager on call and is available to respond with an ambulant team for anyone who is at risk of being harmed or harming someone else. The...

CPS Calls on Women to Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Collective Prevention Service (CPS) says while breast cancer cannot always be prevented, adopting healthy lifestyle practices can contribute to reducing the risk of breast cancer and several other noncommunicable diseases. CPS encourages the community to maintain a healthy body weight, remain physically active, eat a balanced diet, avoid tobacco use and limit alcohol consumption. These healthy lifestyle practices can also reduce the risk of other chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also a time to recognize women and families currently facing breast cancer, those undergoing treatment, survivors, caregivers and families who have lost loved ones to the disease. A breast cancer diagnosis...

Court of Appeal upholds 12-year sentence for fatal Dutch Quarter stabbing

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Court of Appeal has upheld the 12-year prison sentence imposed on J.J.M.J.H. for manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of E.M.R. in Dutch Quarter on February 6, 2025. The Court of First Instance convicted J.J.M.J.H. of manslaughter. It sentenced him to 12 years in prison, with time spent in pre-trial detention deducted. On appeal, the defence sought an acquittal, while the Prosecutor General asked the Court to increase the sentence to 14 years. The Court of Appeal rejected both requests. The defence argued that J.J.M.J.H.’s DNA on a backpack and knife did not prove that he had committed the stabbing. It also challenged the reliability of a witness who identified him and maintained that another...
