Prepaid Electricity the time for action is NOW
SINT MAARTEN (COMMENTARY – By Julian H. Rollocks jr) - As a candidate during the January 2024 parliamentary elections, one of the issues I campaigned on was the introduction of prepaid electricity. I firmly believed then, and I continue to believe today, that prepaid electricity would greatly benefit the people of Sint Maarten. I was pleased to read the recent article in which Mr. Drijvers confirmed that GEBE is working towards implementing a prepaid electricity system. I commend him for being transparent with the public. However, one important question remains: if we are still not ready today, when will we be? Since 2023, I have consistently championed for prepaid electricity because of the significant advantages it offers to consumers, businesses, landlords, and...

How Caribbean Values Is Redefining Global Tourism and Investment
SINT MAARTEN/CARIBBEAN (COMMENTARY - By ir. Damien Richardson) - The Caribbean is undergoing a profound transformation. Wealth is arriving at a pace the region has never experienced. New villas rise along familiar coastlines. Private jets land where fishing boats once anchored. Investors see opportunity. Developers see potential. The world sees paradise. But those who live here understand something deeper: the Caribbean is not simply a destination. It is a way of relating to the world. Caribbean life is built on a culture of joy — not the superficial joy of entertainment, but a relational joy rooted in community, generosity, rhythm, and belonging. This joy is not a product. It is a value system. And in a world hungry for authenticity, it...

It begins with education, awareness, respect and prevention.” MP Roseburg stated. According to MP Roseburg as co- legislator, while enforcement and modernization of the Traffic Ordinance remain essential (and discussing with the ministry are on going), they must be...

NV GEBE Pauses Disconnection of Non-Paying Consumers
SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - After a fruitful meeting with representatives of ACP-SXM on Friday June 26, 2026, NV GEBE has decided to pause the disconnection of non-paying consumers, scheduled for this Monday June 29, 2026. Although NV GEBE has a collection procedure in place, which involves disconnecting non-paying consumers, during the meeting with ACP-SXM it became apparent that this procedure may not be generally known to all of its consumers. Hence, the reason for proper communication of the collection procedure. Mindful of the concern certain consumers may have with invoices related to the period in which NV GEBE had computer issues due to a hack, NV GEBE will first draft a policy that will focus on those invoices where this concern...
