Friday morning through evening: Partly cloudy to cloudy, and windy with isolated showers and possible isolated thunderstorms.

SURFACE WINDS: 
Tonight through Friday evening: East-northeast to east with a moderate to fresh breeze of 13 to 22 mph and higher gusts.  

SYNOPSIS:       

A dry and dusty air mass moving over the northeastern Caribbean will aid in restricting precipitation across the island tonight.  

On Friday, windy conditions will prevail as Tropical Storm Elsa passes south of the local region generating a particularly strong pressure gradient across the region. Though no significant, constant shower activity is expected, there remains a possibility of an outer band reaching the local area which could bring thunderstorms and heavy rainfall to our shores.  

Marine conditions are forecast to continue deteriorating. A small craft advisory is in effect for St. Maarten, and seas up to 10 feet are expected Friday night into Saturday morning. Small craft operators and sea bathers are advised to exercise caution.   

STATE OF THE SEA:  Moderate to Rough       WAVES/SWELLS: 6 to 9 feet  

SPECIAL FEATURES: 
At 5pm, Tropical Storm Elsa was located approximately 780 miles east-southeast of St. Maarten. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center. Tropical Storm Elsa is projected to pass about 280 miles south of the island at its closest point late Friday. 

TROPICAL STORM ELSA DOES NOT POSE A DIRECT THREAT TO ST. MAARTEN. THE METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT OF ST. MAARTEN WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR THIS SYSTEM AND UPDATE THE PUBLIC ACCORDINGLY.
