SURFACE WINDS: 
Tonight through Tuesday evening: East-southeasterly with a light to gentle breeze of 04 to 10 mph, becoming lighter and variable at times. 

SYNOPSIS:   

Moisture transported across the region by light southeasterly winds may trigger a few brief showers.  

Hazardous marine conditions are expected from later tomorrow due to swells generated by major Hurricane Sam. Small craft advisories will be issued when warranted. Small craft operators and sea bathers should exercise extreme caution. 

STATE OF THE SEA:  Slight to moderate         WAVES/SWELLS: 4 to 7 feet  

SPECIAL FEATURE: 
At 5:00 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of major hurricane Sam was located about 700 miles southeast of St. Maarten. Sam is moving toward the northwest near 9 mph. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph with higher gusts.  

On its current forecast track, hurricane Sam is predicted to pass about 345 miles northeast at its closest point to St. Maarten, sometime on Thursday. 

Hurricane conditions are not expected on St. Maarten during the passage of hurricane Sam. However, seas conditions will begin to deteriorate late Tuesday. Small craft advisories will be issued on Tuesday. 

The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor this system and update the public accordingly.
