SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Today, as we celebrate Labor Day, we do more than recognize the contributions of workers to our societies and economies. We also reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect, empower, and advance the interests of working people.
Labor Day is rooted in struggle, sacrifice, and solidarity. The rights many workers now enjoy—fair wages, safer working conditions, reasonable hours, leave benefits, and protection from exploitation—were not freely given. They were won through the determination and unity of trade unions and the workers who stood together.
But while we honor our past victories, our focus must remain firmly on the future.
The world of work is changing rapidly. New technologies, shifting labor markets, economic uncertainty, and evolving employment models present both opportunities and challenges for workers everywhere. In this changing environment, no single union can effectively address these issues alone.
Our vision for the future must therefore be built on stronger collaboration among unions.
The unions represented here today each bring unique strengths, experiences, and perspectives. By working more closely together, we can amplify our collective voice, strengthen advocacy efforts, share resources, and develop coordinated responses to the challenges facing workers in our respective sectors.
Collaboration is not simply a strategy—it is a necessity.
We envision stronger partnerships through joint campaigns, regular dialogue, shared training initiatives, and coordinated advocacy on matters affecting all workers, including fair wages, occupational safety, social protections, and decent work standards.
At the same time, we must deepen our investment in one of our most important responsibilities: educating our members about their rights.
A well-informed worker is an empowered worker.
Too many workers remain unaware of the protections available to them under labor laws, collective agreements, workplace safety regulations, and grievance procedures. This knowledge gap weakens our movement and leaves workers vulnerable.
As unions, we must prioritize continuous education through workshops, seminars, digital platforms, workplace outreach, and mentorship programs. Our members should understand not only their rights, but also their responsibilities and the value of active union participation.
When workers know their rights, they are better equipped to defend them.
When unions collaborate, we are stronger advocates for justice.
And when solidarity guides our actions, the labor movement remains a powerful force for positive change.
Let this Labor Day not only be a celebration, but also a renewed commitment—to unity, education, and progress.
Together, let us build a future where every worker is respected, protected, fairly compensated, and given the opportunity to thrive.
Thank you, and Happy Labor Day to you all.
