LATEST: Dorian heading for the Windward Islands

SINT MAARTEN/CARIBBEAN – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday evening that Tropical Storm Dorian is on track to be near the Windward Islands late Monday or early Tuesday and move into the eastern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday.

Dorian could become a hurricane by Tuesday over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

Additional watches and warnings have been issued and the following islands are now under a Tropical Storm Warning, Barbados, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Dominica, Martinique and Grenada and its dependencies.

Dorian is expected to bring tropical storm conditions to portions of the Lesser Antilles, where tropical storm watches and warnings are in effect.

ARCHIVE - SINT MAARTEN/CARIBBEAN – The Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS) said on Sunday morning that Tropical Storm Dorian is projected to pass approximately 200 miles south of Sint Maarten early Wednesday, and thus currently poses no immediate threat to the country.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Sunday morning that a number of watches and warnings have been issued for the islands of the southern Caribbean.  Barbados is under a tropical storm warning and St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines are under a tropical storm watch.

NHC adds that additional watches could be issued later on Sunday for portions of the Windward and Leeward Islands.

Interests in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Hispanola should continue to monitor the progress of Dorian.   

ARCHIVE - SINT MAARTEN/CARIBBEAN – The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has upgraded Tropical Depression #5 to the fourth storm of the 2019 Atlantic hurricane season. The name of the fourth storm is Dorian. At 5.00pm on Saturday afternoon Dorian was located several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands.

The NHC calls on residents of the central and northern Lesser Antilles to monitor the progress of Dorian.

Tropical Storm Dorian is expected to near the central Lesser Antilles on Tuesday and then into the northeastern Caribbean Sea (south of the U.S. Virgin Islands) on Wednesday and Thursday. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Dorian could be near hurricane strength when it approaches the Lesser Antilles.

According to the NHC, it is too soon to determine the specific timing or magnitude of impacts in the Lesser Antilles, but tropical storm of hurricane watches may be necessary for a portion of the islands on Sunday.

ARCHIVE - SINT MAARTEN (SIMPSON BAY-AIRPORT) – The Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS) announced on Saturday morning that they are monitoring Tropical Depression Five (TD#5) which formed at 11am on Saturday, and at that time was centered at 10.4 North, 47.9 West.

“The depression is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h) and this general motion is expected to continue today. A turn toward the west-northwest is forecast on Sunday, and that motion is expected to continue through Tuesday.

“On the forecast track, the tropical cyclone is expected to be near the central Lesser Antilles on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and the depression is forecast to become a tropical storm later tonight or on Sunday. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1010 mb (29.83 inches).”

TD#5 at this point in time does not pose a threat to Sint Maarten. It is several hundred miles east of the Windward Islands.
