Postal Services update on services in view of COVID-19 developments

SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - Interim Director Marinka Gumbs informed that Postal Services Sint Maarten (PSS) is closely monitoring the COVID-19 developments and has taken preventative measures internally to sensitize staff about the need to escalate hygiene practices both on the job and at home.

Staff was also advised to ensure that they practice the necessary self-care regimens such as ample rest and physical activity as well as proper nutrition. PSS has also increased sanitation protocols throughout its premises. Informative flyers are displayed throughout the offices and in the public areas to also sensitize customers.

With regard to postal services operations around the world, Gumbs noted that according to the United States Postal Services and information received from CDC, “there is likely a very low risk the COVID-19 can be spread from products or packaging shipped from China or other countries due to poor survivability of the virus on surfaces” (Source: USPS Statement on coronavirus, March 4, 2020).

Gumbs stated that PSS would nevertheless continue to monitor the developments surrounding the pandemic and heighten preventative measures as the need arises for the safety of staff and customers.

As an essential service, PSS will remain open for local mail delivery services and for the collection of packages (with notification). Hours of operation are from Mondays to Thursdays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Friday’s closure will be at 4:30 p.m.).

The public is also herewith informed that PSS will not be accepting any packages (mail/parcels) that are shipped via LIAT, our national carrier WINAIR, KLM or American Airlines until further notice.
