SINT MAARTEN/CURACAO - Saturday 26 October the Biblioteka Nashonal Korsou (BNK) had its grand opening of the children book week, in Curaçao. Loekie Morales is one of the nearly 20 authors invited to this yearly Reading, Storytelling and Acting event.
Some storytellers, but mainly authors, have been visiting schools and brought their written stories to life. The aim is to stimulate children to READ more, which enhances their vocabulary, their imagination, way of expressing themselves and much more. This year nearly 40 schools have been participating.
Morales’ Beyond Kultura Events Foundation (BKEF) also aims to promote reading, storytelling, writing and acting among the youth.
Rita Aikma, treasurer of BKEF says. “Our books and stories ignite children's imagination and curiosity, which is invaluable to their personal and intellectual growth. The involvement of authors in Children's Books Week also inspires the next generation of writers and readers."
Morales elaborates: 'The theme this year is 'Esta un Aventura/What an Adventure'. I been telling my own experiences about my serious ‘adventure’ with hurricane Irma in 2017 on Sint Maarten. At some moments I got emotional while talking about my Monster Irma experiences, and some teachers and children too.’
Next to the storytelling, children could see a compilation of the images of the devastation of hurricane Irma on Sint Maarten. It was an exercise on critical observation that led to children mentioning the abnormalities in the video, caused by the hurricane. With those, they had to develop a rap and sing and play it along together.
The session ends happily with the student’s self-made rap about ‘Don’t you mess with a hurricane’.
Monster Storm, the Dutch Version of Storm, is being printed, especially for the schools in Curaçao, to understand the climate change phenomenon and the consequences thereof.
The by Morales visited schools have received a bag with books of several titles, published by Beyond Kultura Events Foundation.
Morales: ‘This year’s children's book festival had provided an excellent opportunity to bring authors closer to their readers. In this setting authors will be inspired by them to continue writing great stories.”
