SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY - By: MP Sjamira D.M. Roseburg, LL.M.) - Today, June 1st, marks International Children’s Day. While it may feel like just another quiet Monday on our island, today is a vital reminder of the most precious part of our community: our youth.
To every child across Sint Maarten: Happy Children’s Day! Your laughter, your brilliant energy, your curiosity, and your big dreams are the very heartbeat of our society.
Today is all about shouting you out, lifting you up, and reminding you how deeply valued you are. As a Member of Parliament and a legal professional, when I look at our youth, I don't just see the leaders of tomorrow—I see our absolute priority today.
Our children truly are the future of Sint Maarten, and that means every single seed we plant in their lives right now determines the strength of the country we will become. But celebrating our children also means remembering that they are born with fundamental rights.
These are beautifully anchored in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Rather than complex legal jargon, these are simple, sacred promises that society makes to ensure every child is safe, loved, and given a fair shot at life.
When we look toward the future, my vision is anchored on keeping these essential United Nations promises to our youth: Under the United Nations framework, every child has an inherent right to an education that sparks their imagination and unlocks their unique potential.
A proper education means preparing our kids for the modern world, ensuring our classrooms are inspiring spaces for all types of learners, and equipping them with digital literacy so they can navigate online spaces safely.
Our schools must always be safe havens where children are empowered to dream big. Part of growing up means learning, exploring, and occasionally making mistakes. The United Nations explicitly highlights the right of children to receive a justice and social system that focuses on rehabilitation, guidance, and dignity.
True support means wrapping our arms around our youth at every stage of that journey. Every child deserves the right to mentorship and a genuine second chance to turn a mistake into a powerful lesson. By continuously supporting positive youth development programs, early intervention, and structured organizations like the Youth Brigade, we show our children that we believe in their resilience and their capacity to lead.
The principle of non-discrimination means that a child’s safety, protection, and opportunities should never be determined by where they are born or where they live.
True equality means striving continuously to ensure that a child growing up on Sint Maarten has access to the exact same high standards of care, resources, and structural safety nets as any other child within the Kingdom.
When we champion equal rights for our kids, we are sending a powerful message that their potential is limitless and that their country stands firmly behind them. We all share a beautiful duty as parents, teachers, neighbors, and leaders to serve as a protective shield and an encouraging voice for our youth.
So today, let’s make it a day of intentional joy. Let’s celebrate the talent in our neighborhoods, the creativity in our homes, and the boundless potential in our classrooms.
To the wonderful children of Sint Maarten: keep shining bright, keep asking big questions, and know that we are working every single day to build the safe, equal, and prosperous future you so richly deserve.
Happy International Children’s Day, Sint Maarten!
