Hurricane Season First Named Storm: Tropical Storm Arthur Forms Near the Middle Texas Coast

SINT MAARTEN/CARIBBEAN – The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has its first named weather system, Tropical Storm Arthur. According to Crown Weather, “Reconnaissance aircraft have been investigating the system near the middle Texas coast all morning (Ed. Wednesday, June 17, 2026) long & have found that it has upwards of 40-50 mph winds.

“In addition, the reconnaissance flight have also found that it has enough of a low-level circulation to classify it as a tropical storm. Because of this, we now have Tropical Storm Arthur located near the middle Texas coast.

“Arthur is expected to move towards the northeast riding near the middle and upper Texas coast throughout the rest of today. Arthur is then expected to push inland into southwestern Louisiana sometime tonight as barely a tropical storm.

“Looking further ahead, model guidance seems to suggest the circulation of Arthur will then track east-northeastward across central Louisiana, central Mississippi, northern Alabama and northern Georgia between late tonight and Thursday evening.

“The circulation associated with Arthur will then push across South Carolina and southern North Carolina on Friday and then offshore of the North Carolina coast on Friday night.

“Once offshore of the North Carolina coast, it’s possible that the circulation associated with Arthur could regenerate and become a tropical storm again as it heads out into the open Atlantic this weekend.”
