Prime Minister Mercelina Urges Early Preparedness as Tropical Atlantic Activity Is Monitored

At 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave are occurring around 550 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions are forecast to become more conducive for development during the next couple of days, and a tropical depression will likely form during the latter half of this week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.
SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Prime Minister and Minister of General Affairs, Dr. Luc F.E. Mercelina, is encouraging residents, businesses and visitors to remain attentive and take the necessary steps to prepare for the possibility of tropical weather during the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season.
The Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten is currently monitoring an area of low pressure in the Central Tropical Atlantic. Based on current forecast models, the system is not expected to pose a direct threat to Sint Maarten at this time. However, weather systems can develop and forecast conditions can change, making it important for the public to remain alert and continue monitoring official updates.
“This is not a call for panic. Based on the information and forecast models currently available, there is no direct threat to Sint Maarten at this time,” Prime Minister Mercelina stated. “However, we know that tropical weather systems can evolve. Therefore, I encourage everyone to remain attentive, keep listening to the official updates and use this time to ensure that their preparations are in order.”
The Prime Minister encourages households to review their family emergency plans, check essential supplies, refill necessary medications, secure important documents and inspect their homes and surroundings. Residents should also consider the needs of children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and pets when making preparations.
Basic hurricane supplies should include sufficient drinking water, non-perishable food, medication, flashlights, batteries, a battery-operated radio, hygiene products, first-aid supplies and necessary infant or pet items. Loose objects around homes and businesses should also be identified in advance so they can be secured quickly if necessary.
“The best time to prepare is before a system threatens our region—not when a watch or warning has already been issued,” the Prime Minister continued. “Taking a few simple steps now can prevent unnecessary stress and last-minute rushing later.”
The public is strongly advised to monitor updates from the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten, the Government of Sint Maarten and other official emergency-management channels. Information received through unofficial sources should always be verified before it is shared.
“Let us remain calm, vigilant and prepared,” Prime Minister Mercelina concluded. “Government will continue monitoring tropical activity and will keep the public informed should circumstances change. By preparing early and following official information, we strengthen the safety and resilience of our entire community.”
