PHILIPSBURG - Deveny Elferink, who is only 13 years old, has returned back to St Maarten after two extensive summer programs in New York.
Deveny attended the SOCAPA School of Creative and Performing Arts where she danced under the professional guidance of choreographer and dance instructor Aushi Oskarsdottir. After the first day Deveny was promoted to both a higher age group and to a higher grade of dancers.
She was extensively coached and driven to improve her dancing skills and within a short time she needed to learn a new dance choreography with new dance techniques. At the end of the very intensive and tiring program Deveny showcased her talents in the final dance of the SOCAPA showcase performance.
The experience to dance with older and more experienced dancers together with the guidance of Aushi Oskarsdottir has certainly benefited Deveny during this summer program. Aushi Oskarsdottir said about Deveny; “It was truly a pleasure having Deveny in the Dance Program! She brings a lot of positive energy to the classroom, and her love of dance is palpable. Deveny is a beautiful dancer with a strong work ethic and eagerness to learn. She did a great job with my choreography, and captured my style quickly. I hope she has a challenging, productive year of dance, and that I get to work with her again!”
The second part of Deveny’s stay in New York was spent at Parsons The New School of Design. Here Deveny not only further developed her fashion designing skills but also her artistic skills. After sketching and compiling an inspiration book, Deveny was given the assignment to make clothing pieces using XXXL T-shirts.
Deveny found her inspiration from the contrasts of the world we live today, combined with a touch of nature. She made a dress, skirt and top using the T-shirts. At the end of the program the fashion design teacher Ms Scherezade Garcia-Vazquezsaid “Deveny has again this year exhibited her exceptional passion and talent for fashion design and has demonstrated great progress in both her artistic and design skills compared to last year. At this time Deveny ahead of her pears in all aspects of fashion design. It is therefore that we are inviting, and urging, Deveny to return to Parsons summer program next year. Deveny is an extreme talent who has a bright future ahead of her. She will be enrolled in the high school advanced class. We will actively be in communication with Deveny throughout the coming year and guide and monitor her developments and assist her achieving the goals she has set herself”.
Deveny’s next goals are performing in the Telem Break Through Talent Contest, designing and making items for Breast Cancer awareness fundraising. Her major next fashion design challenge will be to design and make pieces for her own fashion show scheduled to be held early in 2015.
