GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – Collective Prevention Services (CPS) Section Youth Health Care, from the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labour, will be having their annual Vaccination Open House on Saturday, June 7.

The Vaccination Open House will take place at the Baby Wellness Clinic at A.J.C. Brouwers Road #6 across from the Yogesh Building.  It will be held from 10.00am to 4.00pm.  Parents and guardians are requested to bring along their child’s vaccination record/book in order to update the child’s vaccination status.

Minister of Public Health Hon. Cornelius de Weever ‘Get Checked’ campaign is in line with the efforts of CPS and therefore Minister De Weever is appealing to guardians and parents to get their children checked on June 07 to see if they are up to date with their vaccinations.

The objectives of the open house are to stimulate parents to have their child(ren) vaccinated; to bring about awareness as it relates to vaccinations and to encourage parents and the community at large to take responsibility by ensuring updated vaccination records for the children in their care.

Other individuals who should get their vaccination status checked are, health care workers, pregnant women, pre-and exam class students, as well as groups at risks such as waste/garbage handlers, the Police, hotel and restaurant workers, and others to verify and update their vaccination status, particularly on Hepatitis B and Tetanus.

Immunization averts an estimated two-three million deaths every year, protecting children from diphtheria, measles, pertussis (better known as whooping cough), pneumonia, polio, rotavirus diarrhea, rubella, tetanus and others.

HARBOR VIEW, Sint Maarten - The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams held a meeting with the newly installed Board of the Social and Economic Council (SER) at the SER Office at Harbor View late in the week of May 26.

The Prime Minister stated that as Prime Minister she has been stressing the need for consultation for discussing with various sectors and the need for representatives of the different organizations of St. Maarten to get involved in the thinking process of where all would like St. Maarten to be.

“The SER is an institution that is part of the advisory system that is built around Government and is based on its own organic law that establishes how the SER is appointed and we need to view the office as a Board of different representatives with a staff at its disposal and is growing into a full-fledged social and economic council. The SER is required to advice Government on the Socio-Economic Development of St. Maarten and if laws that touch the social economic sector of Government we need to hear the SER. The SER is an important organization that includes the interests of the Social and Economic fields and is therefore essential to the functioning of St. Maarten,” concluded the Prime Minister.

The SER was established in May of 2011and has as its main goal the advising of government on policies and draft laws in the social and economic field. The Government of St. Maarten requests advice from the SER on matters of a social and economic nature and the SER in turn offers advice to Government on draft laws and policies that fall within its mandate.
