PREPARATIONS LIGHTED PARADE 2016 IN FULL SWING “LIGHTIN’ UP DE ROAD”

PHILIPSBURG – On March 9th 2016 the organizing committee of Rio Productions Lighted Parade conducted a meeting at the Head Quarters of Caribbean Liquors and Tobacco (CLT) to complete the final details for the upcoming 5th annual Lighted Parade that will take place on April 9th 2016.

It is Rio Productions’ mission to provide a safe environment where revelers can enjoy carnival music as they parade in lighted t-shirts and costumes through the streets of the Philipsburg showcasing St. Maarten’s culture. In order to achieve that, the organization of the event needs to be on point with all safety measures taken into consideration. The organizing committee is tasked with the precision planning, and connecting all the dots to make this the best carnival night parade ever in St. Maarten.

A new element that will be added to the lighted parade this year is the “Rio Village” located on the Ring Road opposite the Ennia Building. The organizers envision this to become a “hot spot” where spectators can gather, eat, drink and party while waiting on the lighted parade to pass by. It is also the place where the parade will be ending, as it is marked as the venue for the official after party where the musical entertainment will continue to play well after the parade has ended.

President of Rio Productions, Ms. Brenda Wathey is very excited about the current developments. “Burning Flames and Small Axe will be bands on the road, and for the first time Soggy Dollar Bar will be teaming up with us as well. They are going to build a trailer with amazing light and sound effects whereby local DJ’s will be performing. That, in combination with our costume section and the flashing gadgets that our main sponsors Chippie and CLT will be providing, we can assure each and everyone that it’s going to be a light fantastic show. Something that you just don’t want to miss”.

Availability of T-Shirts is very limited; the general public is therefore advised to pre-register online before the 16th of March at: www.rioproductions.sx

“Neglected” Kids playground to get a facelift with help of TelEm Group & Corporate partners

POND ISLAND – TelEm Group will once again be part of St. Maarten’s island-wide volunteer program, SXM-DOET later this week, by supporting a volunteer effort to breathe new life into a rundown kid’s playground at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex.

The neglected playpark has seen better days and could even be considered dangerous for the young children who still play on the site each day. So much so that frequent visitor to the sports complex, and a mother herself, Mrs. Sharalee Lint-Beudeker, thought it would be a wonderful project to oversee under the DOET initiative to foster community volunteer work.

“It was a shame to see the small children in such a neglected environment each day, and even in that state they still used what little equipment was there,” said Sharalee.

She said some new playthings and equipment have been bought and also some of the existing equipment have been welded and repaired where possible.

The grass has been cut and on Friday and Saturday a chain-link fence will be installed, while volunteers go over the entire park with new lick of paint.

“We will have signs up for parents and children and a bin where garbage can be discarded so that the playpark can be kept in good shape,” continued Sharalee.

“We have personnel of TelEm Group, The Bureau of Telecommunications and Post (St. Maarten), and the accounting and advisory firm BDO registered already and we look forward to all the help we can get,” said the willing volunteer, noting that other volunteers who wish to assist in this project can navigate to and register on the SXM-DOET website where they can see all the projects that will be taking place.

Sharalee says work will take place on both days from 9:00 am in the morning until 5:00 pm, however mainly prep-work will be done on the Friday since many of the volunteers will still be at work. The bulk of the finishing works to be carried out during the Saturday work session.

Only five days to get $25 One Love concert tickets for Reggae music lovers

PHILIPSBURG - There are only five days remaining for Reggae music lovers to get themselves the early bird tickets to the One Love Reggae Concert for Carnival 2016.

Presented by TelCell and St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation (SCDF), the concert will be held on April 28 in Carnival Village and will feature Ky-Mani Marley as headliner, complimented by performing artists Aliane, Romain Virgo and Demarco. The show will also feati Betti V from St. Maarten and Mix-Master Pauly.

The early bird tickets are going for US $25 and are available at Van Dorp. They have been on sale for almost two weeks, giving concert goers the opportunity at a great deal for four top-notch artists.  Once the early bird special is over, it will not be repeated. March 15 is the last day to get the early bird tickets.

One of the largest shows annually, the reggae concert is expected to be “massive” again with head liner Ky-Mani Marley. His last name alone should tell concert goers that he will most naturally channel his legendary father Bob Marley as well as rock the crowd with his own brand of Reggae.

“We are very excited about the event. The Reggae genre is huge in Carnival and we wanted to give lovers of the genre a terrific experience. It is headlined by a Marley, so enough said,” project leader Keianna Liburd said. (SCDF)

HOPE Step it up for gender equality in Sint Maarten, and Unleash the tigress in you

PHILIPSBURG - Mercedes van der Waals Wyatt leader of HOPE party and team members are urging women of St. Maarten to empower themselves.

In a press release on Sunday, HOPE said, “Let’s look for role models and trail blazers who have paved the way for us. They have been many women in St. Maarten who have pioneered and done great things for our island weather it is through community service, business women in our community, teachers, doctors, lawyers but there is still a lot to be done where it concerns Gender equality.

“I say unleash the tigress in you. A woman has to discover the inner power she possesses on the inside that gives her courage, confidence and has to ability to stand up for what she believes in. I believe that the tigress inside of all of us women set the stage for us to reach our goals as individual women of this community. Together we stand stronger and more powerful with all of our talents and intellectual capacities.

“I say unto the women of St. Maarten take the lead and let nothing hold you back from achieving you goals all you got to do is believe in yourself, love yourself and be the best that you can be.

“Gender equality, also known as sex equality, gender egalitarianism, sexual equality or equality of the genders, is the view that both men and women should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on their gender.

“Sint Maarten is, like most Islands in the Caribbean far from this idealistic world. There is still so much to be done. While the girls are statistically doing it better in schools and academically, still most people in higher positions are men. Just look at our politicians (minister’s cabinet and members of parliament), where we have a handful of women against the majority of men. Most of our households are headed by women, so how come tis unequal thing? So it is not because women are not doing it better. It is time to really do something on discrimination against women and come up with solution to go to breakeven, just like it is in the UN symbol for Gender equality.

“Gender equality is one of the program items of HOPE. It is also one goals of the United Nation’s program for Sustainable Development goals for the upcoming 20 years. HOPE is going step by step with this program, in its mission to eradicate inequality between the genders.

“‘Educating girls is vital to human development and improving quality of life. Girls are more likely to reinvest in their families and communities, boosting economies and increasing opportunities for everyone’ is a quote that Loekie Morales has confident in.

“‘We would like more women to be involved in our political system, more women in management positions of government, NGO’s and companies. They can also give lead to regional and international bodies. In our ‘More HOPE for gender equality’ program, we will use hope and confident next to knowledge and experience to bring innovative thinking together to reach gender equality in organizations. HOPE will be one of the parties with a woman on the lead, HOPE leader Mercedes van der Waals Wyatt stated.

HOPE wishes all women of St. Maarten and the world Happy International Women's Day on March 8th.
