St. Maarten Concrete hosts first amazing "Touch a Truck day" event

SINT MAARTEN (PHILIPSBURG)—It was a fun-filled Saturday at the Government Administration Building parking lot in Philipsburg where children from all over St. Maarten were able to fulfil their fantasy of sitting in the driver's seat of some of the biggest trucks on the island operated by St. Maarten Concrete Company.

Children and parents reveled in the sheer joy of being up close to these oversized trucks and being able to touch them. The event started at 10:00 am on Saturday and lasted until 5:00 pm.

Children were spiraling into a frenzy as they climbed into some of the heavy equipment that was on display. St. Maarten Concrete is the first company in St. Maarten to host the "Touch a Truck" event. The event allows children and parents to get close to some of the heavy equipment that is used to deliver the concrete that builds homes on St. Maarten.

The event was also used as a means of raising funds, and the proceeds will go to assisting the children of the I Can Foundation who were on hand for the touch a truck experience.

Many were excited at the opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of the company’s fleet of trucks. The first event has resulted in the organizers, St. Maarten Concrete, committing to making it an annual part of their promotion.

General Manager for St. Maarten Concrete Kenecia David said Sunday, "The event was a huge success for us and especially for the children themselves." She said, "It was a day filled with lots of fun and games, and we enjoyed giving the children supervised access to these trucks so they can touch them and feel what it is like being in one."

Many adults coming to the event recalled what it was like for them as children when they saw the trucks passing by.

One parent at the event said, "I always wanted to get inside the truck and especially wanted to blow the horn because it was so loud and it is so good to see St. Maarten concrete doing this as an activity for children to enjoy."

As the children blew truck horns and operated pump trucks, their parents watched in amazement at how the kid's excitement and many parents joined in the fun of pressing the gas pedal and hearing the huge engines roar while tooting the truck horns.

Other activities for children included lime and spoon races, bouncing castle and several chances to win prizes.

The late Justina “Dominga” Hunt (1972 – 2019) remembered on her birthday

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - On Thursday, September 26, family and friends of Justina Hunt experienced her birth date for the first time in 47 years without her. Justina Hunt, better known Dominga in St. Martin, was born in the Dominican Republic on September 26, 1972. Justina “Dominga” was murdered in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, on August 10, 2019. She was 46.

Her son Christian Marcelino Martes and daughter Megan Leah Hunt survive the late Justina. The deceased also left to mourn her mother, Santa Mercedes; her sisters Cristina, Andrea, and Yenny in St. Martin, and her brother Wilfredo in the USA.

"Dominga was my very close friend. She arrived in St. Martin from Santo Domingo in 1989, and left for St. Thomas in 2001. I missed her then; missing her now is like a nightmare,” said Zoila Meran Carlucci.

“Dominga was a happy woman who loved life. She loved her family very much and always enjoyed a good time with her friends. Imagine the pain that her mother, children, sisters and brother are going through every day and now to remember her so soon on the day that she should be celebrating her 47th birthday,” said Zoila.

“I also remember Dominga as a hard-working woman. She was a loving mother to her children,” said Zoila, who now lives in the USA. When Justina Dominga went to St. Thomas in 2001, it was to attend family matters on behalf of her late father, Andrés Hunt, and she decided to stay there, said Zoila.

In St. Martin, Justina Dominga worked at Robby’s Lottery and Lightning Casino between 1989 and 2001. In St. Thomas, Justina worked at a jewelry store, said her sister Andrea.

The remains of the deceased were cremated in the Virgin Islands following the funeral service in August. Subsequently, a well-attended gathering in memory of Justina Dominga was held in St. Martin for family and friends, said Zoila.

Justina Hunt lost her life in an alleged domestic violence-related murder. The V.I. Police Department had confirmed the August 10 murder of Justina in Bovini, St. Thomas—and that “a man known as ‘Antonio’ … classified as armed and dangerous” was “wanted in connection with the Saturday evening murder,” according to the August 11 edition of stthomassource.com.

Minister Geerlings says UTS share sale to pay off arrears and retroactive payments for justice workers

SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) – On Monday September 9, Sint Maarten’s 12.5 per cent share of United Telecommunications Services (UTS) was acquired by Liberty Latin America Ltd. (LLA).

The governments of Curaçao and St. Maarten held stakes in UTS of 87.5 per cent and 12.5 per cent, respectively. In March this year, LLA acquired Curaçao’s 87.5 per cent of UTS and the acquisition of the remaining 12.5 per cent now results in LLA owning 100 per cent of UTS.

Minister Geerlings said that the sale of shares means an additional cash flow for government which will be used mainly to pay off certain payment arrears, including possibly needed retroactive payments to the justice workers at the Sint Maarten Police Force.

Minister Geerlings added that although the sale means an additional cash flow for government, the goal of government is not to sell the assets of the Country to generate additional income.

Because of the decision of Curaçao to sell their majority share in UTS, Sint Maarten had no other option than to sell their minority share for the most favourable price at this moment before dilution of shares would become a reality with the risk of the shares losing their value.

Other options than selling the shares of Sint Maarten have been investigated by government. However, the sale of shares by Sint Maarten turned out to be the best possible option considering the sales conditions and risks related to not selling the shares at this point in time.

The sale of the shares of Sint Maarten took longer than the sale of the Curaçao shares because of the legislative process that Sint Maarten still had to go through, where Curaçao already went through this process.

The deadline for the sale of the Sint Maarten shares initially was set on June 1 by the buyer, but after conversations with the buyer some time was granted until the beginning of September to finalize the legislative process.

During this period the Minister of Finance and his team worked hard, together with other government departments and the Sint Maarten sales committee members, to negotiate the final terms of sale to be in the best interest of Sint Maarten as much as possible and to have all proper documents in place before the set deadline by the buyer.
