KPSM Team Intensifies Street-Level Enforcement Operations

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) is sending a clear message: enforcement is active, visible, and ongoing. Over the past week, the Action Team conducted a series of targeted operations across multiple districts, combining traffic controls, preventative searches, and rapid response to an armed threat — reinforcing KPSM's commitment to keeping Sint Maarten's roads and communities safe.

On Wednesday, officers deployed to the Maho area with a focus on traffic compliance and order. In a welcome sign of progress, no vehicles were found parked in the designated "No Parking Zone" — a direct result of sustained enforcement efforts and a testament to the impact of consistent policing.

Despite this positive outcome, serious concerns remain about the conduct of certain double-decker bus drivers. Several drivers demonstrated an unwillingness to comply with traffic regulations, particularly in situations where police were not immediately visible. KPSM will not tolerate selective compliance. Going forward, offending bus drivers will face fines and on-the-spot inspections under the Road Traffic Ordinance.

The Action Team also responded to a serious incident in which a man allegedly assaulted another individual and threatened a woman with a firearm before fleeing the scene on foot. Acting on dispatch intelligence, the Action Team coordinated immediately with the responding patrol unit and developed a tactical approach to safely apprehend the armed and potentially dangerous suspect. Upon arrival, the suspect had already left the area and could not be located despite a thorough search of the surroundings. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

During this period, KPSM recorded the following enforcement actions:

75 vehicles checked under the Road Traffic Ordinance, 20 vehicles subjected to preventative search, 32 individuals subjected to preventative frisking, and six scooters checked.

Minister of Finance Gumbs Pushes to Abolish Inheritance and Land taxes

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The proposed law to abolish both the Inheritance Tax (Successiebelasting) and the Land Tax (grondbelasting) has been approved by the Council of Ministers. The Minister of Finance, Hon. Marinka J. Gumbs, now looks forward to appearing before Parliament on Friday, February 13, 2026, to commence deliberations and advance the approval process.

Both laws have been on the books for decades; however, they were never enforced.

“What use is there in having laws that we have not enforced on the books?” the Minister asked rhetorically. The land tax, levies an annual tax on the value of both unimproved and improved land with a structure. The tax rate is 0.3% of the property's value and is charged to the owner. Technically, this would affect all succession land on the island.

Obviously, nobody wants this tax,” the Minister noted. Abolishing it, however, would not affect other taxes which are associated with real estate transactions such as the Transfer Tax (Overdrachtsbelasting), a one-time tax of 4% levied on the transfer of real estate upon purchase or the Long-Lease Land Fees charged if a property is on government-leased land.

With regards to the Inheritance Tax, which is supposed to be levied on assets and money that a person inherits from a deceased individual, the practice has been not to enforce it. Formally abolishing it would remove any doubts about Sint Maarten’s position as a favorable location for estate planning and wealth transfer, in particular with respect to real estate, since there will be no inheritance tax on property passed down to heirs.

Minister Marinka Gumbs reaffirmed her commitment to seeing this reform through and expressed her anticipation that Parliament will move toward the abolition of both the Inheritance Tax and the Land Tax in the public interest.

KPSM Urges Increased Road Safety Following Multiple Serious Traffic Accidents

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) expresses deep concern regarding the number of serious traffic accidents that have occurred during the first five to six weeks of 2026. Tragically, several persons have lost their lives, while others have sustained very serious and life-altering injuries as a result of these incidents.

These accidents have had a profound impact on families, friends, and the wider community. KPSM extends its sincere condolences to all those who have lost loved ones and wishes the injured a full and speedy recovery.

Preliminary investigations indicate that factors such as speeding, reduced visibility, wet road conditions due to rainfall, poor lighting in certain areas, and inattentive driving continue to play a significant role in these serious accidents.

In light of these developments, KPSM urgently calls on all road users to exercise greater caution, particularly when driving:

  • During rainy or wet weather conditions
  • In poorly lit or dark areas
  • During early morning and late-night hours
  • On roads known for sharp bends or reduced visibility

Motorists are strongly urged to:

  • Adjust their speed to road and weather conditions
  • Avoid unnecessary speeding
  • Maintain a safe following distance
  • Ensure vehicles are in proper condition, including lights, tires, and brakes
  • Remain fully attentive and avoid distractions while driving
  • Put away cellphones and other mobile devices while driving — using a cellphone behind the wheel is both dangerous and illegal

Scooter and Motorcycle Riders:

  • Must wear helmets at all times this is required by law and can prevent serious head injuries and save lives
  • Should exercise extra caution due to increased vulnerability on the road
  • Must ensure their vehicles have functioning lights and are properly maintained

KPSM reminds all road users that road safety is a shared responsibility. A moment of impatience or negligence can have irreversible consequences. Every driver, rider, and pedestrian have a role to play in preventing serious injuries or further loss of life on our roads.

The Police Force of Sint Maarten will continue to carry out traffic controls and visibility across the island, while also focusing on preventive measures and public awareness.

Together, let us work to reduce traffic fatalities and make Sint Maarten's roads safer for everyone.

Minister of Finance visits APS New Office in Diamond Estate, Cole Bay

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Minister of Finance, Hon. Marinka J. Gumbs, recently paid a courtesy visit to the new office of the Algemene Pensioenfonds Sint Maarten (APS), located in Diamond Estate, Cole Bay, where she was welcomed by APS Director Mr. Oscar Williams and members of the APS team.

During the visit, the Minister received a guided tour of the premises from APS staff and the Director. She commended APS on its modern and well-designed office space, highlighting the beautiful views and the availability of sufficient parking for customers as positive features that enhance accessibility and service delivery.

Following the tour, the Minister and the APS team convened in the conference room, where several key matters of mutual interest were discussed. These discussions built on issues previously raised during Finance Fridays and APS’s participation in Financial Literacy Month.

One of the initiatives discussed was the possibility of organizing a “Register to the APS Portal Day” at the Government Building. During this one-time on-site event, civil servants would be able to register, receive their password, and obtain immediate access to the APS portal. The aim is to encourage more civil servants to register on the APS portal so they can verify their personal information and obtain a clearer picture of the pension benefits they have accrued and can expect upon retirement.

The Minister also raised the importance of publishing the annual Franchise amount, which is essential for individuals to accurately calculate their net salary from their gross income. This topic had been addressed earlier during a Financial Literacy Month Payroll session led by the Minister herself. APS indicated that it is working toward ensuring that the Franchise is published annually on their website so that employees and pensioners can use it for their calculations.

Another matter discussed concerned the recurring tax liability faced by many pensioners. In some cases, APS pension payments are taxed at the correct tax rate when disbursed. However, when combined with AOV income during the annual income tax filing, the total income can place pensioners in a higher tax bracket, which may than result in an additional tax liability.

As a result, many pensioners are required each year to enter into payment arrangements with the Receivers’ Department to repay the additional tax owed. This recurring situation places financial and administrative strain on elderly citizens and has therefore been identified as an issue that urgently needs to be addressed.

To mitigate this, the Tax Inspectorate has drafted a form which has been reviewed by APS. The form would allow pensioners on a voluntary basis to have additional taxes withheld directly from their pension payments. This measure is intended to reduce the likelihood of unexpected tax bills after filing and to limit the need for yearly payment arrangements. Further details on this initiative will be shared in a separate press release.

Minister Gumbs reaffirmed her commitment to working closely with APS to improve administrative processes and to better support pensioners and civil servants through clearer information and enhanced financial literacy.

She concluded by congratulating APS on its new office in Diamond Estate and expressed her appreciation for the continued collaboration aimed at strengthening pension awareness and financial stability in Sint Maarten.

KPSM Action Team Continues with Targeted Enforcement Operations

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) informs the public that the KPSM Action Team carried out several targeted enforcement and control operations during the past week across the island. These actions were conducted based on up-to-date information, allowing for effective and well-planned deployment.

Operational activities took place at varying times, ranging from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Traffic Controls and Monitoring

On Monday, February 3, 2026, the Action Team conducted multiple traffic controls in District 1 and District 2. During these controls, a total of 15 vehicles were stopped and 18 individuals were preventively searched. All controls were carried out in an orderly manner and without incident.

Following these controls, the team proceeded to the Maho area to monitor traffic conditions. It was observed that drivers of double-decker buses were once again allowing passengers to board and disembark at the roundabout on the public roadway when police presence was absent, despite previous serious warnings issued to address this behavior.

The Community Police Officer (CPO) was informed of the situation and indicated that contact would be made with the respective bus company to address and prevent the continued unsafe conduct.

Weekend Operations and Enforcement

During the weekend, multiple large-scale controls and roadblocks were conducted at various locations across the island. These operations focused on vehicles, scooter riders, and individuals, particularly at known hotspots.

In total, 27 scooter riders were checked. One scooter was confiscated due to the rider’s inability to present valid documentation. A positive observation during these controls was a noticeable decrease in reckless driving behavior among scooter riders.

During another control, a motorcyclist was found to be in possession of a falsified insurance document. The rider was immediately arrested on suspicion of forgery. According to the

statement of the driver and owner, an amount of USD 600 was paid for the fraudulent insurance. This is not the first arrest linked to this specific falsified insurance document.

Additionally, during a control on Airport Boulevard, a vehicle refused to stop when ordered to do so by police officers. A pursuit was initiated, during which the vehicle fled in the direction of the French side of the island. The vehicle was believed to be occupied by a male and a female.

Action Team – Overview of Figures

  • 145 vehicles checked
  • 15 vehicles searched based on preventive authorization
  • 27 scooters checked
  • 45 individuals preventively searched
  • 1 arrest for forgery

The Police Force of Sint Maarten remains committed to maintaining public safety and enforcing traffic regulations and will continue to conduct targeted operations to promote safe and responsible behavior on the island’s roads.

Minister Brug encourages preventative health measures during flu season

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, Richinel S.J. Brug, is encouraging the community to take simple, proactive steps to protect their health as flu season is underway.

The Minister emphasized that this message is to reinforce the importance of preventative healthcare practices that help reduce seasonal illness, raise and strengthen the immune system, and support overall well-being.

“As we move through flu season, this is simply a reminder that prevention is always better than cure,” Minister Brug stated. “Small, consistent actions such as taking daily vitamins, staying hydrated, getting adequate rest, eating balanced meals, and actively working to raise our immune systems can make a meaningful difference.”

Minister Brug highlighted that Sint Maarten, as a Caribbean country, is fortunate to have access to natural remedies that have long been part of the region’s culture and traditions.

“We live in the Caribbean, where many natural resources are available to us,” he noted. “Local remedies such as ginger tea, ginger shots, turmeric, honey, lime, and other immune-supporting preparations have been used for generations. Incorporating these into our daily routines, alongside proper hygiene and medical guidance when necessary, can help strengthen our bodies during this time.”

The Minister also encouraged residents to maintain proper hand hygiene and Stay home when feeling unwell.

“Preventative health is a key pillar of our policy approach. When we take steps to strengthen our immune systems, we protect not only ourselves, but also our families and the most vulnerable members of our society.”

The Ministry of VSA continues to promote preventative healthcare as part of its broader public health strategy, recognizing that strong communities are built on informed, proactive choices.

KPSM Takes Enforcement Action Against Illegal Parking in the Maho Area

SINT MAARTEN (MAHO) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) advises the public that persistent and ongoing illegal parking along Rhine Road in the Maho area and at the entrance of Beacon Hill Road has forced the police to take decisive enforcement action. Despite repeated complaints, warnings, and preventive measures implemented over an extended period, traffic violations at this location have continued, creating serious disruptions to the free flow of traffic and posing risks to road users and pedestrians.

Over the past several weeks, KPSM has received multiple requests and complaints regarding illegal parking along Rhine Road leading into the Maho area, as well as at the entrance of Beacon Hill Road. Community officers assigned to the Maho area have, over time, implemented several measures to discourage drivers from parking on sidewalks.

In collaboration with concerned parents and community members, concrete dividers were placed to prevent vehicles from parking on pedestrian walkways. However, drivers have adjusted their behavior and have begun parking on the roadway itself. This has resulted in a narrowing of the entrance to Beacon Hill Road and the roundabout leading into Maho, significantly affecting traffic circulation in this heavily used area.

As the preventive measures proved ineffective, KPSM transitioned to active enforcement. On Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026, police officers conducted enforcement actions at the location, during which fines were issued and several vehicles were towed for violating traffic regulations. These actions were taken in accordance with the clearly posted no-stopping/no-parking signs present in the area.

KPSM strongly urges residents, tour operators (including large and small buses), ATV rental companies, and visitors to refrain from parking along Rhine Road in Maho and at the entrance of Beacon Hill Road. Illegal parking in these locations continues to obstruct traffic flow and compromises public safety.

Due to continued non-compliance, the police are forced to divert personnel from already limited operational resources to address this behavior—resources that could otherwise be deployed to manage other critical policing duties.

KPSM calls on all road users to cooperate and comply with traffic regulations to ensure a safe, orderly, and accessible traffic environment in the Maho area.

Four animal care groups receive annual Island Gems support

SINT MAARTEN (CAY HILL) - The Island Gems Charity Foundation, the island’s longest-running charity organization, has once again extended its annual support to four dedicated animal welfare groups: Animal Defenders St. Maarten, I Love My Island Dog, SXM Paws, and the Animal Welfare Foundation. The annual donations help fund essential initiatives, including sterilization programmes and medical care.

Island Gems has deposited a total of US $1,000 per organization into the groups’ preferred veterinary clinics to cover spay and neuter procedures for dogs and cats. This annual contribution forms part of the foundation’s ongoing efforts to help control the island’s feral and abandoned animal population. The deposits create prepaid accounts that the organizations can draw on throughout the year for these specific procedures.

Each of the beneficiary organizations plays a vital role in improving animal welfare across the island.

Animal Defenders St. Maarten focuses on sterilization, vaccination, and feeding programs for stray animals, while also advocating for compassionate care.

I Love My Island Dog works to reduce pet overpopulation through spay and neuter efforts and assists in rehoming stray dogs.

SXM Paws rescues, rehabilitates, and rehomes abandoned animals while actively promoting responsible pet ownership.

Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) organizes large-scale sterilization campaigns and conducts educational outreach aimed at reducing the number of stray animals.

The donations were lodged with the following veterinary clinics: for I Love My Island Dog Association – St. Maarten Veterinary Clinic; Animal Defenders – Animal Care Clinic; AWF – Animal Hospital St. Maarten; and SXM Paws – Island Vet.

Founded as an all-women charitable organization, the Island Gems Charity Foundation raises funds through its annual costume gala, with proceeds supporting non-profit initiatives that benefit projects and communities on both sides of the island. Over the years, the foundation has funded projects in education, healthcare, environmental conservation, and animal welfare.

“We are proud to continue our annual support for these organizations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals on the island. Their dedication to rescue, sterilization, and awareness is making a real difference,” said Alita Singh, president of Island Gems Charity Foundation.

Tickets for the annual costume gala, themed “Heroes and Villains,” on Friday, March 28, are now available. Those interested in supporting the foundation’s efforts can purchase tickets by contacting any Island Gems member.

“Every ticket purchased contributes to making a meaningful difference in our community. We invite everyone to join us for a spectacular evening while supporting important causes,” added long-time Island Gems member Jody Rosen.
