WIB marks Customer Appreciation Day with meaningful outreach

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Customer Appreciation Day 2026, was celebrated across the MCB Group on May 15 through a range of activities recognizing customers and strengthening community ties. As part of this group-wide initiative, The Windward Islands Bank (WIB) marked the occasion by engaging directly with customers and celebrating the relationships built over many years.

WIB senior management and staff took time to personally thank customers who visited the branch and to recognize a group of loyal customers for their continued trust and support.

Mrs. Jas Bryan-Labega, the second person to open an account with WIB when the bank first opened in December 1960, was also among the customers thanked on the day. A respected community stalwart, Mrs. Labega has contributed for many decades to public life, real estate development, and the advancement of sports, including her role as a Founder and Second Vice President of the World Boxing Organization and President of the Sint Maarten Boxing Association. Her long‑standing relationship with the bank reflects WIB’s deep roots in the St. Maarten community.

During the celebration, customers who have been part of WIB’s journey took a moment to share stories that were simple but spoke volumes. These included families who have saved with the bank across generations, entrepreneurs who were supported in pursuing their dreams even without traditional collateral, and business owners who, in difficult times, knew they could pick up the phone and be met with understanding. These reflections captured the close, relationship‑based approach that has always defined WIB’s role on the island.

As part of the day’s activities, special‑edition World Cup Kompa Leon Gift Cards and branded giveaways were distributed to customers who used WIB ATMs and visited participating merchants across the Dutch side of the island, as a small thank you for their loyalty and continued support. Managers also visited several commercial clients and presented tokens of appreciation for their ongoing relationship with WIB.

Through these moments, WIB reaffirmed what has always been at its core: staying accessible, community‑focused, and genuinely connected to the people it serves, while honoring the relationships that have stood the test of time and the customers who have grown with WIB over the years.

National Remembrance Day – May 4, 2026. Commemoration Activities take place Late Monday Afternoon

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – On Monday, May 4, 2026, the Government of Sint Maarten will observe National Remembrance Day, (“Dodenherdenking”) like the other countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

During this National Commemoration Day, all Dutch victims – civilians and soldiers – who have been killed in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere else in the world in war situations or during peace-keeping operations since the outbreak of the Second World War (WWII) are commemorated.

This year’s theme is “Learning to Understand History”, and the year 2026 marks 81 years since the ending of WWII.

The regular commemoration ceremony, taking place at the Captain Hodge Wharf in Philipsburg, will feature several key elements including an opening prayer by Archdeacon Terrence Rawlins and the official wreath laying ceremony by His Excellency the Governor Ajamu Baly, the Honorable President of Parliament Mrs. Sarah Wescot-Williams, and the Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina.

Following the wreath laying, the “Last Post” will be played, succeeded by two minutes of silence after the tolling of the bells. This segment will conclude with the Dutch Anthem and Sint Maarten Song.

Additionally, the top management of various uniformed troops – Police, Marines, Sint Maarten Voluntary Corps (VKS), and the Marechaussee – will jointly lay a wreath in honor of the fallen.

As has become tradition, two distinguished guests, Mrs. Elsje Bosch and Mrs. Bernadine van Veen, wife of the late Mr. Gerard van Veen, have been invited. Both Bosch and Gerard van Veen experienced World War II during their childhoods. The two ladies will lay a wreath on behalf of all the children affected by the fight for freedom over the years.

This year, Pathfinder Mr. Shodemar Levenstone will present a poem written by drs. Mrs. Egstorf-Pantophlet from her book “A different Stick o’ Fire, World War Two in the Caribbean, fragments of a forgotten Legacy”. Pathfinder Ms. Mo’Riah Stewart will read an excerpt written by Mrs. Elsje Bosch, describing her personal emotions and experiences during World War II. Trumpetist Wilfred Phelipa will accompany the ceremony with his musical performances.

Furthermore, all invited guests will have the opportunity to lay a single flower at the War Memorial Monument, which bears the names of World War II victims primarily from Sint Maarten.

The public is encouraged to attend to attend the ceremony, which will commence with a march by uniformed law enforcement and military groups beginning at the front of the Courthouse to the Captain Hodge Wharf.

The event will also be rebroadcasted on social media. Special thanks go out to the Port Sint Maarten Group of Companies (PSG) for annually facilitating this event.

Business owners are reminded to fly their flags at half-mast and each citizen is encouraged to honor a period of two minutes of silence, which is considered throughout the Dutch Caribbean at around 6:00 p.m. The general public that wish to attend can do so by latest 5:30 p.m. before the official start of the ceremony at 6:00 p.m.

The public is hereby notified that the roads leading to and the access to the Captain Hodge Wharf will be closed off for vehicles in the late afternoon of Monday, May 4, 2026.

Minister Brug joins Ambulance Department during J'ouvert morning parade

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (VSA), Richinel Brug, joined the Ambulance Department early this morning to carry out a shift in support of the Jouvert Morning parade.

The experience provided a firsthand look at the event from the perspective of ambulance personnel, highlighting a different dimension of frontline response. While the Minister has previously served alongside VKS and police officers, this opportunity offered insight into the critical role ambulance teams play in monitoring, responding, and providing immediate medical care during large-scale public events. The Jouvert Morning parade remains one of the island’s most vibrant cultural celebrations, attracting large crowds and requiring careful planning to ensure public safety.

Minister Brug extends his sincere appreciation to all frontline workers who were on duty during the event, including ambulance personnel, police officers, firefighters, and all other emergency and support services who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a safe celebration.

“As a former frontline worker myself, I understand the dedication, long hours, and sacrifices that come with this responsibility,” Minister Brug stated. “While many are enjoying the festivities, our frontline workers are focused on keeping everyone safe, and their efforts do not always receive the recognition they truly deserve.”

“It is through both the professionalism of our frontline workers and the cooperation of the public that events like Jouvert can take place safely and successfully,” he added. “I am proud to have stood alongside our frontline teams and to personally thank them for their invaluable service to our community.”

The Ministry of VSA commends all those involved for contributing to a safe and successful Jouvert Morning parade.
