Port St. Maarten volunteers help clean-up Middle Region after passing of Hurricane Gonzalo

POINT BLANCHE – 25 staff members from Port St. Maarten on Sunday were seen in the district of Middle Region helping with the national clean-up effort in connection with the passing of Hurricane Gonzalo on Monday.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Port St. Maarten Mark Mingo is encouraging other government owned companies and private sector businesses to volunteer their time on the weekends to help the people in the districts to remove debris.

Port St. Maarten staff will be out next weekend to continue with their social corporate responsibility to help the people in the districts in cleaning-up hurricane related debris.

“Destination St. Maarten/St. Martin has already bounced back.  The cruise ships are back and stay-over visitors are also here.  As a society, we need to work and help each other in need.  When disaster strikes, we are all our brothers and sisters keeper.

“We have come together in the past to help each other, and now is the time to do so again in order to move our country forward together.  If every company pools their staff together and volunteers their time each weekend, we can do wonders and really make a change within the districts.  This benefits the neighborhoods and the destination.  We will definitely be back next weekend,” CEO Mark Mingo said on Sunday.

MP Lake said he is ready to fight for the rights of the peoples parliament and demand respect for the country constitution

PHILIPSBURG – Member of Parliament Hon. Maurice Lake of the United People’s (UP) Party said he is not surprised by the instruction given to the Governor of Sint Maarten by the Kingdom Council of Ministers.

“Some of the Dutch Members of the Second Chamber of Parliament in The Hague, and some of our own, are on a witch hunt against this broad based Government which is following all rules and procedures as a collective unit to better serve our people.  These rules and procedures are based on the rule of law and our Constitution, the highest law of the land,

“As was duly elected by the people of Sint Maarten, and I condemn the instruction that has been issued by the Kingdom Council of Ministers as being unconstitutional and an interference in the autonomous status of our country.

“The people have voted for me and put their trust in me for upholding the law, integrity, and to serve them for the next four years. That's why we have a parliament to make decisions in the interest and to better serve our people.  We are capable of carrying out our own screening of Ministers.  Within the past four years it was done three times under three governments.  Prior to this broad-based Government there was no talk coming from Dutch MPs and the Kingdom Council of Ministers about changing the screening process.

“The people of Sint Maarten are not stupid and can see clearly the motives behind the Dutch Government. We have our own institutions that are enshrined in law with respect to their roles and responsibilities within our constitutional jurisdiction, again based on the rule of law.

“As I stated before, I have nothing against the integrity reports which is based on a lot of hearsay.  I am in favour of implementing some of the recommendations of the reports, but due diligence must be done with respect to the merits.  Country Sint Maarten must be given a chance to do it instead of judging us before we implement the recommendations and screening for our people.  This is a responsibility of country Sint Maarten!

“I don't have anything to hide, and I am open to screening, but conducted by our own rules and laws as was established by the Island Council and Parliament of Sint Maarten.

“The vindictive politics that is taking place is destroying the very fabric of our society.  It is not a good example for our young people. We need to raise the bar in politics on the island and within the Kingdom.  There are those responsible from the island who is giving the country a bad name in trying to bring down our own.  We need to work together as all political parties and stop criticizing our own as St. Maarteners.  Do it in a constructive manner, not in a vindictive one, because after all we are all one people.

“The illegal and unconstitutional instruction from the Kingdom Council of Minister has only made me steadfast and ready to fight for the rights of the people and country Sint Maarten,” MP Hon. Maurice Lake said on Sunday.

TelEm Group mobile, data networks ride out hurricane Gonzalo

POND ISLAND –  TelEm Group management last night thanked the company’s team of technicians and engineers who kept  voice and mobile date services up and running for customers badly affected by hurricane Gonzalo, Monday night and all day Tuesday.

The company closed its doors to the public Tuesday and instructed staff to remain home while managers, Procurement Department personnel, and Hurricane committee members assessed damage to the company’s telecommunication infrastructure.

Technicians, Outside Plant and IT personnel also reported for duty to restore services where necessary and maintain communication links for the island.

“We were very fortunate to have maintained services throughout the past two days and we are proud that customers were able to make use of their mobile phones and send internet messages to friends and family to let them know how they fared from what turned out to be a surprisingly strong hurricane,” said TelEm Group Chief Financial Officer, (CFO) Mrs. Helma Etnel.

She said management is most grateful to all those who manned their stations Tuesday and is thanking personnel for their commitment to their customers and the St. Maarten public.

According to Technical staff, very few of the company’s network of cell sites were affected by the passing of hurricane Gonzalo, despite some fierce winds. Amongst those affected were cell sites in the Lowlands area, Cupe Coy, Pelican and Saunders.

“In the few areas that we experienced some problems, some customers were still able to obtain service from other cell sites close by, and that has also pleased our network operators, said TelEm Group’s Chief Technical Officer, (CTO) Mr. Eldert Louisa.

He said personnel had prepared well for Hurricane Gonzalo Monday once a warning of deteriorating weather conditions was announced. He said although the preparations were initially for a much less damaging tropical storm, they very quickly moved up a notch once it was known the Gonzalo was building up to hurricane strength.

Mr. Louisa thanked his technical staff for their diligent work Tuesday, noting that their response once the all-clear was given after the passing of the storm, was quick and efficient.

Population Ageing Trends High on the Agenda for Social Development

PHILIPSBURG - The Symposium on Ageing held last week Wednesday acted as the first step in spreading the awareness about the challenges of an ageing population and letting the public know that this issue is high on the agenda of the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development, and Labour (VSA). Based on the feedback from the audience at the symposium, Social Development is headed in the right direction when it comes to identifying the key priority areas St. Maarten is dealing with due to an increase in the ageing population.

Key priority areas that were presented to the audience at the symposium included:  (1) increased social participation of the elderly, (2) promotion of independent and assisted living for the elderly, and (3) increased community collaboration for efficient and effective services for the elderly. Invited suggestions or recommendations provided by the audience will be used as additional information to shape the development of the vision and framework.

“A population is considered ageing when more than 10% of the population is 60+. In St. Maarten 13.9% of the population is 60+, putting us well on the map of the global trend of ageing populations. Current trends are illustrating that more and more of our population are living 20 to 40 years longer. Coping with this dramatic shift presents many challenges. Such as the increased demand for more facilities and services that cater to seniors who are more dependent on others. Another challenge is the decreasing numbers of person who are economically active which ultimately hampers the social security system that is in place.

Dealing with a society that is ageing from a social, economic, and cultural perspective means we must ensure that resources are reserved towards improving and expanding current infrastructure, services and restructuring the social security system. These are only some of the challenges that need to be explored in collaboration with key stakeholders”, said Minister Cornelius de Weever in an invited statement.

The Department of Social Development has announced their commitment to having an all-inclusive approach to the development of an ageing vision and strategic framework for St. Maarten. Once a plan of approach has been approved by the Council of Ministers the department intends to get all key stakeholders such as relevant ministries and NGOS involved in the process. Together solutions will be developed to tackle the challenges posed by an increasingly ageing population. The official step in moving towards a vision and framework for the ageing population on St. Maarten was announced by Ms. Joy Arnell Acting Secretary-General/ Department Head of Social Development at the symposium.

Minister Cornelius de Weever has given the Department of Social Development his full support in preparing the framework to secure the well-being of the community for the current and future elders.
