More whistleblowers report employer over bad practices

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Reports of suspected bad practices in the workplace went up 50% last year, whistleblower support organisation Huis voor Klokkenluiders has said in its annual report.

In total, 369 people contacted the organisation in 2023 compared to 243 the year before.

Chairman Wilbert Tomesen said more attention to cases in the media is the probable cause of the increase. A law passed last year which offers whistleblowers more protection has also boosted reports, he said.

The cases brought to the attention of the Huis voor Klokkenluiders included the way companies handle company secrets and personal data, suspected fraud, infractions of safety rules as well as reports of unacceptable behaviour and socially unsafe situations.

Tomesen said that unlike in previous years, more reports had come in from compliance officers, freelancers, managers and board members.

Some 37 of the 396 reports concerned “whistleblowing cases”, meaning that a reported practice is of wider social importance and that the people who report them are often bullied, isolated, intimidated, or fired.

Half of the 37 cases took place in semi-public organisations, for instance in hospitals, where a whistleblower reported medical procedures carried out by unqualified staff which might endanger the safety of patients.

“Often whistleblowers are already in conflict with their employer when they come to us, which limits our possibilities to intervene. It is better to contact us earlier in the process, so we can work towards a good solution, ” Tomesen said.

Employers also contacted the organisation more often, he said, because they want to know how a complaints procedure should be carried out. The involvement of the Huis voor Klokkenluiders also makes a difference in how employers look at the issue in question.

“We are not here to escalate matters. We want the problem to be solved for everyone involved,” Tomesen said.

Half of Dutch workers spend time working from home

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Some 52% of the working population worked at home last year, the highest percentage in the EU, according to new figures from nationals statistics agency CBS.

Most of those who worked from home were based away from the office for up to 50% of their working week, the CBS said.

People who worked in tech and the creative industries were most likely to be home based – nine in 10 of them said they worked from home for some or most of the time. People in managerial functions were also more likely to work at home, although 70% of them spent most time in the office.

Figures from 2022 and quoted by the CBS show that the Dutch are more likely to work from home than people in any other member state. Sweden, Finland, Luxemburg and Ireland completed the top five.

Working from home surged during the coronavirus pandemic.

Coalition talks enter next phase for a “programme-based” cabinet

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – The PVV, VVD, NSC en BBB should now start talks on forming a “programme-based cabinet” in which they reach a deal on the main things they want to achieve, lead negotiator Kim Putters said on Thursday afternoon.

Once this has been done, a group of ministers and junior ministers should work out a coalition programme in more detail, stating how the targets should be reached, Putters said. It would also, he said, be beneficial if around half the ministers had political experience and the rest were outsiders.

Such a cabinet, he said, would do justice to the election results and could boost trust in the political process in society at large. Neither a majority cabinet nor a minority cabinet are an option in the current situation.

Between them, the four parties have 88 seats in the 150-seat lower house of parliament. On Wednesday, Geert Wilders, leader of the far right PVV, said he would not be prime minister because he did not have the support of all of the potential coalition partners.

As yet is is unclear who could be prime minister, but all four party leaders have agreed to remain in the lower house of parliament. In addition, all four, Putters said, would do well to keep their posts on social media to a minimum.

NSC leader Pieter Omtzigt said in a reaction that he welcomes the idea of an agreement that focuses on the main issues, but that the finances should be properly sorted out as well. The VVD’s Dilan Yesilgöz said her party was ready to take responsibility.

Despite the agreement, opposition parties were sceptical about the idea of a “programme based” cabinet and commentators too have questioned the concept.

CDA leader Henri Bontenbal said he was pleased progress is being made, but said he considered a “programme cabinet” to be the same as one in which the ruling parties have a majority. “If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it is a duck,” he said.

GroenLinks-PvdA and Volt focused their criticism on the VVD and NSC, both of which had said they would not be in a majority cabinet with Wilders. “Programme cabinet is a language trick to normalize the radical right-wing PVV,” Volt leader Laurens Dassen said.

MPs will debate Putters’ report next Wednesday, at which point it will be decided who should lead the next round of talks.

Half the drugs crooks arrested in Antwerp are from NL

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Half the drugs-related criminals arrested in Antwerp come from the Netherlands, the head of the city’s public prosecution department has told the NRC in an interview.

“Some 50% of the 150 people we picked up in the port last year were from the Netherlands,” Franky De Keyzer told the paper. “It has been like that for years.”

In addition, of the 151 people arrested for violent drugs-related crimes last year, 69 were Dutch, he said. In 2022, Dutch nationals accounted for 47 of the 95 arrests.

“Rotterdam and Antwerp ports are just 75 kilometres apart,” De Keyzer said. “That makes it one area for drugs criminals.

“In an ideal world we would work with mixed teams from the police and justice departments,” he told the paper. “Criminal organisations can move smoothly through Europe because there are no borders and we should be removing more boundaries when it comes to detective work.”

Last week, five Dutch teenagers were arrested in the port itself where they were thought to be looking for a consignment of cocaine. Two of them were just 14. Two people in the Netherlands have also been arrested in connection with a drugs-related shooting in Antwerp, which resulted in the death of an 11-year-old girl.

Antwerp and Rotterdam ports have a key role in the cocaine trade. Last year 121 tonnes of cocaine was seized in the Belgian city and most of that would have been traded on through the Netherlands, experts say.

Wilders gives up prime minister hopes under deal to end deadlock

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – The leader of the largest party in the Dutch parliament, Geert Wilders, has confirmed he will not be prime minister in a right-wing government.

Wilders posted on social media site X that he could not count on the support of all four parties that have been in talks for the last three months to form a cabinet.

The announcement came the day before Kim Putters, who has been leading talks between the four parties – Wilders’s PVV, the liberal VVD, the centre-right NSC and the farmers’ party BBB – is due to report his findings to parliament.

Putters is expected to say that the parties are ready to form a so-called “extra-parliamentary” cabinet, with some ministers drawn from outside the political parties.

As part of the deal, all four party leaders – Wilders, Dilan Yesilgöz of the VVD, Pieter Omtzigt of NSC and Caroline van der Plas of the BBB – are understood to have agreed to keep their seats in parliament rather than take ministerial posts.

The development gives Wilders the initiative in nominating the new prime minister, the first since Mark Rutte took over from Jan-Peter Balkenende in 2010.

Wilders is expected to look beyond his own group of MPs, none of whom has ministerial experience. Of the other three parties only the VVD has experience of being in government.

Omtzigt walked out of the previous round of negotiations four weeks ago after concluding that the differences between his party and the PVV on constitutional rights were irreconcilable.

Now that Wilders has given up his hopes of becoming prime minister Omtzigt is expected to return to the negotiating table.

Yesilgöz also said after the election that the VVD would not appoint ministers to a cabinet led by Wilders, but has since said her party will take part in an extra-parliamentary government as long as NSC does the same. (By Gordon Darroch)

Travel agency says sorry after Suriname slavery gaffe

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Travel agency TUI has apologised for a description accompanying a trip to the former Dutch colony of Suriname which included the phrases ‘step into the shoes of our brave forebears” and “taste the atmosphere at the plantations.”

The text was highlighted on Instagram where it was met with indignation from, among others, anti-racism group Kick Out Zwarte Piet (KOZP).

TUI has since changed the wording in its brochure. “We hang our heads in shame,” TUI said in response to the Instagram post. “Undoubtedly, the copywriter had no malice in mind but we understand completely how hurtful this is, and how stupid we have been for not flagging it up.”

Suriname was a Dutch colony from 1667 until 1954. Until the abolition of the slave trade in 1863, its plantation economy depended entirely on slave labour.

One third of over-75s need help with simple household tasks

SINT MAARTEN/THE NETHERLANDS – Around half of people over the age of 55 have difficulty managing household chores and other activities, with single people struggling more than those with a partner, the latest health monitor figures from statistics agency CBS have shown.

Activities which caused problems include preparing a meal, managing finances, and housework. Some 34% of people over the age of 75 said they were struggling with at least one household activity or could not do it at all.

There are currently some 1.3 million people over the age of 75 in the Netherlands. That figure will almost have doubled to 2.1 million by 2030, government figures show.

Over nine in 10 of the over 75s still independently at home, as do two-thirds of the over 90s.

The last regular pensioners homes in the Netherlands closed in 2020. Although in the main, people prefer to live at home for as long as possible, the home help services that are meant to enable them to continue to live independently are struggling to find staff and waiting lists are long.

The percentage of people in all age groups who have trouble with day-to-day activities is higher among people who live alone than people who have a partner, at 67% and 45% respectively.
