Matters of the Heart Seminar Encourages Honest Conversations About Singleness, Identity and Purpose

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - What began as a seminar for singles quickly evolved into a meaningful conversation that resonated with both single and married attendees as Victory Temple Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) hosted the first event in its "Matters of the Heart" series featuring author and speaker Vanessa I. Farrell on Wednesday, June 2, 2026.

The Singles Seminar and Book Signing centred on Farrell’s Amazon bestselling book, Delayed, Not Denied: The Journey of Singleness. It's Worth the Wait, and invited participants to reflect on relationships, purpose, timing, and personal growth.

During the session, Farrell shared her personal journey and the inspiration behind the book.

“Delayed, Not Denied began as a directive from God,” she explained. “Much of my early adult life was focused on education and achieving personal goals. Looking back, I realised that focus shaped many aspects of my dating journey.”

Farrell encouraged attendees to see singleness not as a delay in God's promises but as a season of growth, self-discovery, and preparation.

“Rather than putting life on hold while waiting for marriage, I encouraged participants to nurture themselves, clarify what they want, and become the person they are called to be,” she said.

Drawing from surveys of both married and single women featured in the book, Farrell highlighted how many of the concerns and experiences shared by women were remarkably similar regardless of relationship status.

Among the topics discussed were choosing a spouse based on who they are today rather than their potential, the impact of menopause on dating and self-perception, the challenges some women face in transitioning from independence to partnership, and the influence of social media on modern expectations of relationships.

One attendee reflected on the value of the information presented.

“I wish I had this information when I was younger. I know I would have made better decisions around love and marriage for my life.”

Farrell noted that the comment echoed a common theme she has encountered during discussions surrounding the book.

“One participant shared that she married in her early twenties and felt that, at that age, she was chosen rather than intentionally choosing. She reflected that when we're young, attention can sometimes be mistaken for compatibility, and we may move forward without fully considering whether a relationship is aligned with our long-term goals and values.”

Other attendees expressed appreciation for the honesty and relatability of the discussion.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. I see myself in your journey, and it’s comforting to know that I’m not alone.”

“As a single woman, I desire marriage, but there are times when I wonder if remaining single might be less stressful. Is it okay to feel that way?”

“I need to get a copy of this book for my nieces who are entering the dating world. I believe it offers practical insight and wisdom that will help them navigate this season of life.”

Bishop Dr. Michael Greenaway, Senior Pastor of Victory Temple COGOP, said the session exceeded expectations.

“While the first night was geared towards singles, the married folks gathered much important information to help them navigate their journey in a more positive way.”

He described the event as both practical and impactful, noting that attendees were able to engage openly in discussions that touched on real-life experiences and challenges.

Questions Reveal Ongoing Need for Hypertension Education in Sint Maarten

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The questions raised during a last Thursday’s Heart Health Workshop at Victory Temple Church of God of Prophecy (COGOP) highlighted what health professionals have long recognised. Many people are living with or at risk of high blood pressure yet remain uncertain about how to properly manage the condition.

The workshop, led by St. Croix-based health coach and public health professional Vanessa I. Farrell, formed part of the church's "Matters of the Heart" series and attracted strong community interest as participants sought practical answers about monitoring and controlling hypertension.

While St. Maarten continues to acknowledge hypertension as a major public health challenge, updated prevalence figures from the country's 2023-2024 STEPS Survey are still pending publication. The last National Health Survey conducted in 2015 identified high blood pressure as a common condition among adults on the island, underscoring the importance of continued public education and prevention efforts.

Farrell said many of the questions asked during the session reflected concerns she encounters regularly when working with clients.

"People often know they have high blood pressure, but they don't always understand how to manage it effectively day-to-day. Education remains one of our strongest tools for prevention and control."

Throughout the evening, participants sought guidance on issues many healthcare providers may assume are already understood.

Questions included:

  • What is the best time to take your blood pressure?
  • Which arm should be used when taking a reading?
  • Why can a full bladder affect blood pressure results?
  • What is the correct technique for taking blood pressure at home?
  • Why is sitting quietly before a reading important?
  • Which foods support healthy blood pressure?
  • Why should blood pressure readings be recorded?
  • What should someone do if they forget to take their medication?
  • How often should blood pressure be checked at home?

Farrell explained that these seemingly simple questions can have a significant impact on how accurately people understand and manage their condition.

"Many individuals rely on how they feel to determine whether their blood pressure is under control. The reality is that hypertension often has no symptoms until a serious health event occurs. That's why knowing your numbers and monitoring them consistently is so important."

Participants left the workshop with a renewed commitment to making changes in their daily routines.

One attendee pledged to begin recording blood pressure readings daily to better understand how medication was affecting their health.

Others committed to paying closer attention to sodium content on food labels, preparing meals with healthier cooking methods, taking medication consistently, and monitoring their blood pressure regularly rather than waiting until they felt unwell.

"I never realized how much sodium was hidden in everyday foods. Going forward, I will be more intentional about my food choices."

"This session helped me realize the importance of monitoring my blood pressure consistently instead of waiting until I don't feel well."

"I understand now that taking my medication as prescribed is important, even when I feel fine."

Bishop Dr. Michael Greenaway, Senior Pastor of Victory Temple COGOP, said the response to the workshop demonstrated a clear appetite for practical health education within the community.

"The hypertensive presentation was an eye opener for most. The interactions were very insightful. By and large, it was very impactful."

He noted that participants appreciated Farrell's ability to combine professional knowledge with practical application.

"She knew the material and her own personal experience was frank and open."

THE NETHERLANDS - In line with a proposal submitted by the Member of Parliament (MP) of Sint Maarten, Mrs. Sarah A. Wescot-Williams, President of Parliament, the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) dedicated the entire day on Saturday, June 6, 2026, to a central theme that allowed for more extensive and in-depth discussions alongside the other topics on the IPKO agenda. This edition’s central theme is “Cooperation within the IPKO and in the Kingdom.”

The day commenced with a panel discussion on the theme from various perspectives, including governance, history, reforms, justice, and energy transition. The panel consisted of Mr. Paul Comenencia, Mrs. Maria van der Sluijs-Plantz, Mr. Bote ter Steege, and Mr. Roban van Herk. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Wouter Veenendaal.

Following the panel discussion, delegates were divided into several groups to discuss their positive and negative experiences regarding cooperation within the Kingdom. Discussions focused on four policy areas: (1) Governance and Finance, (2) Rule of Law and Security, (3) Foreign Policy and Defense, and (4) Education and Development.

These sessions were facilitated by professional discussion leaders in a private setting. The groups also explored what the countries need from one another in the future to strengthen cooperation and how elected representatives can contribute to achieving this objective. The group discussions were followed by a plenary debriefing on the outcomes of the second part of the sessions.

The day concluded with an informal discussion with the State Secretary for Kingdom Relations, Mr. Eric van der Burg, on cooperation within the Kingdom and what is necessary to foster cooperation in accordance with the Charter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Parliamentary delegations of Sint Maarten, Aruba & Curaçao, issue Resolution on UN Slavery Resolution

THE NETHERLANDS (THE HAGUE) - On June 4, 2026, the parliamentary delegations of Sint Maarten, Aruba and Curaçao reached a joint Resolution during their Tripartite Consultation.

In this Resolution, the three delegations express their disagreement with the Kingdom of the Netherlands’ decision to abstain from voting last March on a United Nations resolution declaring the trafficking of enslaved Africans and slavery as the gravest crime against humanity.

The delegations regret that the Kingdom of the Netherlands adopted its position on this issue without prior consultation with the three Caribbean countries within the Kingdom, despite the direct historical, social, and moral significance of the matter for the countries and their peoples.

For this reason, the Resolution emphasizes that this lack of consultation once again demonstrates a structural “democratic deficit” within the Kingdom, particularly in foreign affairs matters that directly affect the Caribbean countries, and it request that the delegation of the States-General at the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO) brings this Resolution to the attention of the Kingdom Government with the request to provide a written motivated response within three months.

During the IPKO in The Hague that commenced on June 5, 2026, the three delegations, through their Presidents of Parliament, Mrs. Sarah Wescot-Williams (Sint Maarten), Mr. Alfred Sneek (Aruba), and Mr. Fergino Brownbill (Curaçao), presented this Resolution to the delegation of the States-General of the Netherlands (First and Second Chamber).

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – Effective immediately, the Government of Sint Maarten hereby informs the general public of precautionary measures being implemented in response to ongoing Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)-related health concerns affecting parts of Africa.

While the risk of importation remains low, the Government of Sint Maarten emphasizes that these measures are preventive and are being implemented out of an abundance of caution.

There are currently no confirmed cases of Ebola in Sint Maarten.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid non-essential travel to the affected countries at this time.

These measures are being taken to safeguard public health and to prevent the potential importation of the Ebola virus into Sint Maarten.

Effective immediately, all passengers, regardless of nationality, are not permitted to enter or transit through Sint Maarten if, within the 21 days prior to travel, they have been present in or have transited through any of the following countries: Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda and or South Sudan.

Additionally, passengers travelling via Sint Maarten to an onward destination must not be accepted for travel to Sint Maarten unless their admissibility to the onward destination has been verified in advance by the carrier.

This applies in particular to passengers who have been present in, or transited through, a country subject to restrictions applied by the onward destination.

In addition to the countries listed in the Sint Maarten public-health measure, this currently includes Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Burundi and Nigeria for onward travel to St. Kitts and Nevis or Antigua. Travelers whose final destination is Anguilla or St. Barths, and who have travelled through countries listed in the public health measure of Sint Maarten will need to travel via another airport.

The following categories of travellers are exempt from the above restrictions, subject to strict public health monitoring protocols:

Residents of Sint Maarten and Saint Martin (French side); Residents from Saba and St. Eustatius, provided they are in same-day transit only.

The following health monitoring measures have also been implemented as a precaution according to international standards and procedures. All exempt individuals may be subject to: Enhanced health screening upon arrival; Possible monitoring for a period of up to 21 days, in accordance with established public health guidelines.

Transmission requires close physical contact with symptomatic persons.

Individuals who choose to travel to these areas should be aware that they may be subject to enhanced health screening and possible isolation upon return.

Travelers are further advised to carry all relevant documentation, including proof of residency, when traveling.

The public is encouraged to remain informed through official Government communication channels and to adhere strictly to all public health guidance.

Police officer sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for threatening former partner with firearm

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Court of First Instance has convicted police officer R.M.M. for threatening his former partner with a firearm and imposed an unconditional prison sentence of six months.

In its (verbal) verdict rendered in June 4, 2026, the Court found that the defendant's conduct in the context of a domestic dispute constituted a criminal threat.

In determining the sentence, the Court considered that making a threat with a firearm is a severe criminal offense, and the defendant is a police officer. His actions, behavior and his failure to take ownership of what happened – denying any wrongdoing, despite evidence to the contrary – could be disruptive for public confidence in the police as a whole.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2025, and was investigated by the National Detectives (Landsrecherche) under the direction of the Prosecutor’s Office (OM SXM).

OM SXM emphasizes that threats involving firearms are treated as serious criminal offenses. Such conduct can have a profound impact on victims and undermines the sense of safety within the community.

OM SXM remains committed to the careful investigation and prosecution of offenses involving threats, violence, and the misuse of firearms, regardless of the position or profession of the persons involved.

Port St. Maarten Celebrates Successful Completion of Simpson Bay Causeway Bridge Lighting Upgrade

PORT ST. MAARTEN – Port St. Maarten is proud to announce the successful completion of the Simpson Bay Causeway Bridge Lighting Upgrade Project, a landmark infrastructure investment that modernizes and enhances the functionality, reliability, and visual appeal of one of St. Maarten's most recognizable gateways.

The project involved the complete replacement and modernization of the bridge's lighting system, upgrades to the electrical and control infrastructure, installation of newly fabricated side panels, repairs to key bridge components, and the deployment of advanced programmable LED technology throughout the structure.

The bridge now features more than 1,350 meters of programmable linear LED lighting, with approximately 675 meters of lighting installed on each side of the bridge. If placed vertically, the total length of the installed lighting would extend higher than a 400-story building, illustrating the scale and complexity of the project.

The newly installed lighting system utilizes modern, energy-efficient LED technology that significantly reduces power consumption while delivering enhanced brightness, durability, and operational performance. The system is fully programmable, allowing the bridge to display dynamic colors, animations, and themed lighting sequences in support of national celebrations, cultural events, awareness campaigns, and special commemorations throughout the year.

Following months of planning, procurement, engineering reviews, fabrication, and logistics coordination, physical works commenced in January 2026, and the works were successfully completed on schedule for June 4th, 2026.

To celebrate the successful completion of the project, Port St. Maarten will host a special 20-minute inaugural light show beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5th, showcasing the full capabilities of the new lighting system.

Following the inaugural presentation, the Simpson Bay Causeway Bridge will be illuminated in purple in support of Vitiligo Awareness, demonstrating the Port's ongoing commitment to community engagement and support for important social causes.

Port St. Maarten extends its sincere appreciation to all project partners, contractors, government stakeholders, technical teams, and members of the public for their patience, cooperation, and support throughout the implementation of the works.

"The completion of the Simpson Bay Causeway Bridge Lighting Upgrade underscores Port St. Maarten's commitment to preserving and enhancing critical infrastructure while ensuring that one of the island's most iconic landmarks continues to serve as a source of pride for residents and visitors alike for generations to come," said Alexander Gumbs, Chief Executive Officer of Port St. Maarten Group.

Government Announces Strong Results from Tax Compliance Project

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Government of Sint Maarten has announced the successful completion of its Joint Tax Compliance Initiative, conducted between February and April 2026. The initiative resulted in improved taxpayer engagement, strengthened compliance administration, and positive revenue performance.

Led by Minister of Finance Ms. Marinka Gumbs in collaboration with SZV Deputy Director Mr. Elton Felisie, the initiative was carried out through a coordinated effort involving SBAB, ATS, and tax compliance specialists from Sint Maarten and Curaçao. The project focused on strengthening tax compliance, enhancing taxpayer engagement, and improving the accuracy of taxpayer information.

A total of 30 professionals were deployed across nine districts, resulting in the delivery of 2,253 compliance letters to businesses and taxpayers concerning outstanding declarations, unpaid obligations, missing filings, and record discrepancies.

Key outcomes of the initiative included:

  • 392 taxpayer submissions containing supporting documentation;
  • 388 company files referred for review;
  • 286 files fully processed; and
  • 106 files remaining under active review.

The project also resulted in significant administrative updates, including new registrations, deregistrations, salary adjustments, and corrections to employer and taxpayer records. In addition, the initiative identified and verified more than 200 changes across over 100 employers, underscoring the importance of maintaining accurate and up-to-date compliance data.

Minister of Finance Marinka Gumbs emphasized that the project successfully balanced compliance enforcement with taxpayer support.

“This initiative demonstrates that compliance is most effective when government and taxpayers work together. Many individuals and businesses responded constructively, corrected inaccuracies, and regularized their positions, contributing to a stronger and more sustainable future for Sint Maarten.”

SZV Deputy Director Elton Felisie highlighted the importance of inter-agency collaboration in achieving these results.

“These outcomes underscore the value of cooperation between institutions and the importance of maintaining accurate taxpayer information to support the effective administration of tax and social insurance obligations.”

Preliminary indicators show positive improvements in both compliance and revenue performance compared to the same period in 2025. Revenue collections increased across several major tax categories, including Wage Tax, Turnover Tax, Profit Tax, AVBZ, AOV/AWW, and ZV/OV, reflecting stronger compliance and improved taxpayer responsiveness.

While a comprehensive analysis of the initiative’s long-term impact remains ongoing, the Government views these early results as evidence that targeted compliance efforts can strengthen revenue administration, improve data accuracy, and support a fair and sustainable tax system.

The Government of Sint Maarten remains committed to advancing compliance initiatives, enhancing taxpayer services, and promoting transparency, fairness, and fiscal responsibility throughout the country's tax administration system.

Native Choir – The Gathering: An Evening of Ancestral Remembrance, Storytelling, and Return

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Under a canopy of stars and at the foot of a sacred tree, poet, author, and creative producer Safiyya Chance brought her debut poetry collection Native Choir to life through an immersive evening of movement, storytelling, music, and community gathering.

Held at Axum Art Café on Front Street in Philipsburg, Native Choir – The Gathering transformed poetry from the page into a living, breathing experience that invited audiences to reconnect with ancestry, identity, and self.

Created and produced by Chance, The Gathering was inspired by a selection of poems from her debut collection, Native Choir. The production fused spoken word, dance, live drumming, and theatrical interpretation into a powerful narrative journey. Through a series of interconnected performances, the audience was guided through stories of memory, loss, resilience, belonging, and return.

For Chance, Axum Art Café was more than a venue—it was home.

“Axum is where I found my voice,” Chance shared. “It felt important that this first gathering happened in the place that nurtured my growth as a writer and artist.”

Intentional in every detail, Chance chose to host the event outdoors, allowing nature itself to become part of the performance. Beneath the stars and grounded by the presence of the tree, the evening unfolded around a kontè—a traditional storytelling vessel that served as the spiritual and symbolic thread connecting each story. Through the kontè, narratives moved seamlessly between spoken word and embodied performance, interpreted by a cast of performers whom Chance affectionately refers to as “silent actors.”

These silent actors transformed poetry into movement, expressing emotion and ancestral memory through dance and physical storytelling. Their performances gave form to the unspoken, allowing audiences to witness the poems beyond language.

Throughout the evening, the steady pulse of live drumming echoed through the space, creating a rhythmic foundation that called listeners inward. The sounds of the drums intertwined with live poetry readings and contemporary movement, evoking ancestral traditions while speaking directly to the present moment. Dancers moved with intention and reverence, carrying stories across generations and embodying themes of remembrance, healing, and reclamation.

More than a performance, The Gathering was conceived as a communal experience.

Chance envisioned the event as a call home for those who feel disconnected—from their history, from their culture, from themselves. Through poetry and performance, she encouraged attendees to reflect on their roots and reclaim the parts of themselves that may have been forgotten or silenced.

“The Gathering was about remembering,” said Chance. “Remembering who we are beneath expectations, beneath survival, beneath the stories we've inherited. It was an invitation to return to our native selves.”

Audience members described the evening as moving, transformative, and deeply resonant. The fusion of artistic disciplines created an atmosphere that felt both intimate and ceremonial, weaving together personal narratives and collective memory into a tapestry of shared experience.

As the inaugural presentation of Native ChoirThe Gathering marks the beginning of a larger artistic journey. Building on the themes introduced in this first event, Chance is already developing the next chapter in the series, continuing her exploration of ancestry, identity, truth, and return through immersive performance experiences.

With poetry as its foundation and community at its heart, Native Choir – The Gathering served as a powerful reminder that storytelling remains one of humanity's oldest and most sacred ways of finding one another.
