CPS Encourages Families to Practice Water Safety and Sun Protection during the Summer Holiday Season

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – With schools now closed and the summer holiday season underway, the Collective Prevention Service (CPS), a department within the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor (Ministry VSA), is encouraging residents and visitors to make safety a priority while enjoying the island's beaches and swimming pools.

The summer months provide families with opportunities to spend more time outdoors, but they also bring increased risks associated with prolonged sun exposure, dehydration, and drowning. CPS is reminding parents, guardians, caregivers, and the public that many of these risks can be prevented by taking simple precautions.

One of the most important safety messages is to never leave children unattended around water. Whether at the beach, a swimming pool, or even in a bathtub, children should always be under the constant supervision of a responsible adult. Drowning can occur quickly and silently, often in a matter of seconds, making continuous supervision essential.

According to global public health data, the highest rates of drowning occur among children between the ages of one and four years, followed by children between the ages of five and nine. Even children who know how to swim should never be left unsupervised in or near the water.

CPS advises adults supervising children to remain fully attentive and avoid distractions such as mobile phones, reading, or engaging in lengthy conversations. A designated "water watcher" should always be present and focused solely on monitoring children while they are swimming or playing near the water.

Parents are also encouraged to enroll school-age children in swimming lessons. Learning basic swimming and water safety skills significantly reduces the risk of drowning and provides children with lifelong skills that promote confidence, physical fitness, and safe recreational activities.

In addition to water safety, residents are urged to protect themselves from the effects of the sun and extreme heat. Spending long hours outdoors without adequate protection can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and other heat-related illnesses.

CPS recommends the following safety tips for a healthy day at the beach or pool:

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty, to prevent dehydration.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every two hours, or more frequently after swimming or excessive sweating.

Wear lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses that provide ultraviolet (UV) protection.

Consider wearing UV-protective swimwear or clothing for additional protection from the sun's harmful rays.

Use a lip balm containing SPF to protect your lips from sunburn.

Seek shade regularly, particularly during the hottest hours of the day, and take breaks from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

CPS also reminds beachgoers and pool users to swim only in designated areas, pay attention to sea conditions, and avoid swimming alone whenever possible. Individuals should never enter the water under the influence of alcohol or drugs, as these substances impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the risk of drowning.

"Summer is a time for families to relax and enjoy Sint Maarten's beautiful beaches and outdoor activities," CPS stated. "By remaining vigilant around water, protecting yourself from the sun, and staying hydrated, everyone can help ensure that the summer holiday season remains safe, healthy, and enjoyable."

The Collective Prevention Service wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable summer and encourages the public to make water safety and sun protection part of every beach and pool outing.

“Many of our native trees really benefit people, and they have for centuries,” said Les Fruits de Mer President Jenn Yerkes. “This book can help you find the right tree for any spot: one that doesn’t get too big, or can handle salty sea spray, or gives shade even during the dry season!”

During the event, the association will be giving away seedlings of some of the trees featured in the book and of other plants, while supplies last.

The book is available as a free download from http://lesfruitsdemer.com, and for purchase on amazon.com worldwide. SSSD Presents: “Applying for a U.S. Student Visa or Canadian Study Permit” Workshop on Thursday, June 18

SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Many of our students opt to pursue their tertiary education in the USA and Canada. To do so, students will need a student visa or study permit as the last legal documents before leaving the island.

The Student Support Services Division (SSSD) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport is hosting a workshop entitled, “Applying for a U.S. Student Visa or Canadian Study Permit” on Thursday, June 18, 2026. This workshop, which is free of charge, will be held at the University of St. Martin from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM.

According to SSSD officials, many students are often overwhelmed by the process of obtaining a student visa or study permit. Some also find it challenging while navigating all the requirements and changes relating to studying in the USA and Canada. With this workshop, SSSD is aiming to stem those concerns.

This annual workshop is open to students who will be going to the US or Canada to study in the upcoming school year (August/ September or January) as well as students in their last year of secondary school who are considering these countries as places to study. Parents are also welcomed, together with their child, based on availability of seats.

“The recent developments in both the US and Canada, as it relates to international students, dictate that all immigration documents are properly completed and procedures followed,” SSSD officials stated.

They stressed that it is important that students follow the correct steps in the application process since this can cause delays or even that their application is turned down. The workshop will explain the steps students need to take when applying either for their U.S. Student Visa or Study Permit for Canada. Explanation of the documents needed as well as the fees to be paid, will be given.

“Even if you have not received your I-20 (US schools) or Letter of Acceptance (LOA) (Canada) and you are scheduled to start school later this year, you can still attend this workshop,” SSSD officials stated.

Persons interested in attending this workshop are encouraged to contact Student Support Services Division (SSSD) at telephone 543-1235 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to reserve a seat since space is limited. People can also go to the SSSD Facebook page and scan the QR code on the flyer to register. Participants are encouraged to bring their own writing materials to the workshop and to be on time.

The Student Support Services Division is located upstairs of the Gatspy’s store, across from the Police Station and next to the Windward Island Bank (WIB) in Philipsburg. SSSD provides many services to students including psychological services, counseling services, speech language pathology services, social work services, educational diagnostic services, career services, as well as parental workshops and parent support groups.

CTO Launches Landmark Tourism Supply Side Committee. CARICOM Chairman Dr. Terrance Drew Backs Initiative to Keep More Wealth in the Caribbean

CARIBBEAN/NEW YORK — Calling for a new model of tourism that creates and retains greater value within the Caribbean, Dr. Terrance Drew, prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis and chairman of CARICOM, has endorsed the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) new Tourism Supply Side Initiative, describing it as a critical step toward ensuring that tourism benefits the region’s people and its economies.

Prime Minister Drew delivered virtual remarks Thursday during the launch of the new committee at Caribbean Week in New York, held at InterContinental New York Times Square.

Speaking in his capacity as CARICOM chairman, Dr. Drew said the future of Caribbean tourism must be centered on creating greater value for the region by strengthening connections between tourism and the wider economy. He emphasized that the sector should support local entrepreneurs, rural communities, small businesses, women and youth while fostering innovation, regional integration and sustainable development.

“Tourism must not only create wealth in the Caribbean; it must help keep that wealth in the Caribbean,” he said.

The new committee represents a strategic shift from a traditional demand-driven focus on visitor arrivals to a comprehensive supply-side approach centered on workforce development, local supplier integration, logistics, infrastructure, digital transformation and public-private partnerships.

Joining Dr. Drew were Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s minister of tourism and chair of the new Tourism Supply Side Committee; Ian Gooding-Edghill, CTO chairman and Barbados’ minister of tourism and international transport for Barbados; Dona Regis-Prosper, CTO secretary-general and CEO; and Sanovnik Destang, president of the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA).

Minister Bartlett described the initiative as a move toward building a more integrated tourism economy by strengthening linkages between tourism and agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, transportation, technology and the creative industries.

The minister emphasized that the committee will be driven by measurable targets and practical implementation with the goal of creating a more resilient, inclusive and competitive tourism economy. “The future of Caribbean tourism must be defined not only by resilience but by transformation,” he said.

Minister Gooding-Edghill described the tourism supply side initiative as a practical, action-oriented effort to strengthen the Caribbean’s economic competitiveness by increasing the region’s capacity to supply its own tourism industry. He said the initiative — one of the most significant decisions CTO has taken — will help reduce import dependence, retain more foreign exchange, contain inflationary pressures, stimulate entrepreneurship and job creation, and build stronger regional supply chains.

Stressing the importance of implementation, he noted that the committee’s success will depend on data-driven decision-making and collaboration among governments, the private sector and development partners. “This program is about us within the Caribbean region understanding how best we can retain more of the foreign exchange that we earn within this region,” he said.

Regis-Prosper said the new development marks the realization of a long-envisioned strategy to strengthen the region’s tourism ecosystem. “Tourism cannot work in the Caribbean if it’s an insular approach. It has to be a regional approach with the Caribbean brand leading first,” she said.

The strategy also envisions the development of a regional logistics hub, a dedicated tourism bank, a regional pension plan for tourism workers and expanded capacity-building initiatives to create a more resilient and inclusive tourism economy that retains more value within the Caribbean.

Destang welcomed the committee as an accelerator of long-standing private-sector efforts: “The first chapter of Caribbean tourism was attracting visitors. The second chapter was growing arrivals. The next chapter is maximizing the value that tourism creates for our Caribbean people. That is why today’s launch matters. Not because we’re just creating another committee but because it creates another opportunity for government and the private sector to work together toward a shared objective: a more resilient and more inclusive Caribbean tourism economy.”

Chaired by Jamaica, the committee currently comprises 13 CTO member states: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the Turks and Caicos Islands, and will work closely with CHTA and CTO’s allied members.

Partnerships with the Inter-American Development Bank and other stakeholders will support demand-driven analysis and the development of a regional logistics hub framework with initial deliverables targeted for early 2027. (CTO)
