Sint Maarten Consumer Prices Stay Stable in Q1 2026
SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) – The Department of Statistics (STAT) reports stable consumer prices in Sint Maarten for Q1 2026. The Consumer Price Index (CPI), key measure of everyday costs, reached 115.78, a modest 0.43% increase from Q4 2025 (115.28) and 0.66% year-on-year from Q1 2025 (115.02). CPI prices are collected during the first two weeks of each month, followed by validation (a detailed review) in the third or fourth week. A fuel price surge began after the second week of March, coinciding with the war in Iran. As a result, Q1 2026 CPI was not affected as severely as expected. St. Maarten Introduces MOBI App to Strengthen Maritime Security and Compliance
SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - St. Maarten has become the first Dutch Caribbean island to launch the MOBI app, a digital platform that strengthens maritime security and supports compliance with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code. The application was introduced during a recent maritime workshop on St. Maarten and was made possible through cooperation with the Kingdom Maritime Administration (KMA), the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Amsterdam. KPSM Seeking Public Assistance in Severe Ill-Treatment Investigation. Victim Remains in Critical Condition
SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - The Police Force of Sint Maarten (KPSM) is requesting the assistance of the public in connection with an ongoing investigation into a severe ill-treatment incident that took place on May 3rd, 2026. During this incident, the male victim, J.J. “Jack” Tanis, was severely ill-treated by unknown suspect(s). As a result of the assault, the victim sustained serious head injuries and had to undergo emergency surgery due to the severe blows he received. Currently, he remains in critical condition. Detectives have been actively investigating this case and have developed certain leads. 22 candidates move forward with full PhD scholarship application
SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Twenty-two researchers have advanced to the next phase of the PhD Scholarships 2025 programme. They are invited to develop their initial idea into a full application. From idea to full proposal At the end of 2025 and early 2026, a committee of 23 Caribbean researchers reviewed 72 pre-proposals. Based on this, 22 candidates were selected to continue. The NWO Executive Board confirmed this decision in March 2026. Careful assessment Each submission was reviewed by three to five committee members. Based on scores and feedback, 22 candidates were invited to proceed. That is more than anticipated for due to the high quality of the submitted pre-proposals.
